The Rugbys began as a Louisville, Kentucky cover band, founded in 1965. Members include Mike Hoerni on bass, Steve McNicol on lead guitar, Eddy Vernon on keyboards and Glen Howerton on drums. Their first single, "Walking The Streets Tonight", was written by Doug Sahm of the Sir Douglas Quintet.

This was originally the B-side of The Rugbys' second single, "Stay With Me." Until "You, I" was released and promoted, the band mostly received modest local recognition. Both songs were written by Steve McNicol.

When the song hit #1 locally, the group were signed to Amazon Records, which re-released the song nationally. It made it into the low 20s on the national charts. The followup single, "Wendegahl the Warlock," was unimpressive. The band spent the next year on the road, opening for a wide variety of headliners. Their only album is Hot Cargo, which has been released on CD. (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath, for all above)
