This is a song about a controversial case of police brutality. In 1976, 39 year old Liddle Towers was arrested outside a night club in Gateshead, near Newcastle Upon Tyne in the North East of England. Credible eyewitnesses claimed that excessive force was used, to put it mildly. Towers was said to have been beaten by no less than 8 police officers. He was detained overnight and when he was released the following morning he could hardly move.
He died 3 weeks later, and an inquest made a finding of "justifiable homicide," a strange verdict indeed in the case of an unarmed man. Public disquiet caused the Attorney-General to challenge the verdict on the grounds that it was inconsistent with the evidence. A second inquest returned a verdict of death by misadventure. No police officer was so much as disciplined in connection with this case.
In Britain, police officers wear blue uniforms; the title shows what Robinson - and countless other people who did not share his ideology - thought really happened.
