Songfacts®:

  • When Al Stewart moved up to London to seek fame and fortune on the folk circuit after playing electric guitar in and around Bournemouth, he stayed at various addresses in and around Central London. This autobiographical song was written while he was living in Lisle Street in the heart of the West End. Al was barely out of his teens when he made the move, for the most part alone and uncertain as to the future. Although they may come from different backgrounds this is a song with which many - especially young - people who find themselves living in broadly similar circumstances will be able to identify. >>
