Songfacts®:

  • Frontman Ben Gibbard spoke to VH1 News about this track: "Nick (Harmer, bass guitarist) and I had this running list over the course of the year of the saddest things we've ever seen. I think Nick still has the number one entry with an elderly woman eating a piece of birthday cake in the deli of a grocery store. I mean that is truly, truly one of the saddest things I've ever seen. And women crying in airports by themselves, and then this idea of a grown man sleeping in a twin bed. The idea of somebody getting rid of their queen sized bed because what's the point of it if it never gets used, like 'No one is ever going to share this with me, and I'm just so disillusioned of the idea of finding anybody that I'm just going to go and get a smaller bed to make some room in my apartment so I can put some other s--t in there.' That's the sentiment of the song."
