  • Uncle Kracker is Kid Rock's DJ. Rock produced this and released the album on his record label.
  • This is about a man who has an affair with a married woman. The song did very well on Adult Contemporary radio, where many people heard it as background music and didn't listen to the lyrics.
  • This was the first hit for Kracker. His first single, "Yeah Yeah Yeah," was a flop. This was his next single.
  • Mark McGrath, lead singer of Sugar Ray, is in the video.

Lisa from Texas... you hit the nail on the head girl. It doesn't have to be a married woman having the affair, it could be a married man too. Whomever is free from the pressures of their marriage and enjoys the freedom and passion of an affair. Thus giving the line "swims through your veins like a fish in the sea".Leigh - Muskoka, On
Love it.Emmy - Bellville, On
It was in an interview with MTV and to quote him " it is a dirty little song painted with a beautiful paintbrush."Ang - Pueblo, Co
In an interview Unkle Kracker says it can be about both, but he will not say which one if any applies to him bc he is married with kids and doesn't want to cause himself any trouble.Ang - Pueblo, Co
I laughed when I read most of these. I think everybody has a fair point. I don't think it has anything to do with drugs, of any kind, or an affair. Besides, you can have a ring on your ring finger on the left hand and not be engaged, or married. My friends and I do it all the time. A bunch of people are going to have a different opinion on this song, because everybody has opinions. There is an old adage about having opinions. Think about it.Julie - Sandy Creek, Ny
I disagree with everyone who thinks this song is about drugs. It is about a woman having an affair. I've had an affair in the past and every line totally fits an affair.
"All you know is when I'm with you I make you free" .... no responsibilities ... no commitments. Your free, for the time being. Away from reality.
"And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea" ... the rush of being with another man .... the excitement .... the risk of being caught ... it's a rush
"I'm not worried 'bout the ring you wear" ... who shoots up through their finger? He's referring to the wedding band on her finger ....
"Cause as long as no one knows then nobody can care" ... you hide an affair, no one knows that your cheating ... until you get caught
"Your feelin' guilty ..." she's feeling a little guilty she's cheating on her husband
"I'm not the reason that you go astray" it's most likely the husband that is the reason she goes astray.
Vivian - Green Bay, Wi
Please note that i did not scrutinize every comment, i skimmed through mojority; not even all of the numerous comments. In saying that, what stuck out in my head was what Tammy from Northwood said about good song writers (Uncle Kracker being decent, above average i'll give him that) ill paraphrase what she said this is not verbatim: Good song writers can write a song and make it personal for the individual for there own 'interpretation.' I concur, good song writers like Rodger Waters one of the original founder of the most intriguing, and most definatly, hands down, the Best Damn Band in the Land! And growing up in 60's and mainly 70's (haha Dude) my opinion, and i stress that this is only my 'professional' opinion, is that classic rock bands, especially "good" psychedelic rock bands did this to the absolute greatest extint. Eventhough when song writersPhilip Worrell - Tristate, Oh
i would vote for drug i dont know but the first thing that comes to mind when he says swim through your vains is shooting up and he doesnt mention anything about being married but if you know anyone who shots up it leaves a huge ring where the needle was placed and that is only thing that can "make you free" or at least that is what they think when they are high and usingAndfa,m - Franktowm, Ak
Maybe it is about drugs and a cheating wife? i mean those go hand in hand dont they? there is proof about both it being about drugs and there is proof that it can be about both. Stop arguing hahaKeenan - Casper, Wy
I think most songs are personal to the writer. However good writers, can make a song become personal for each individual and open to interpretation, each person will take from it what they will, and interpret it to there own experience, feeling or thoughts. Don't argue, it is what it is.Tammy - Northwood, Nh
Look all you people who think it is about drugs are totally wrong. You should go back and read the song lyrics again. It is extremly clear that the song is about him (uncle Kracker) having an affair with a maariage woman. Just listen to it one more time and im show it will become much much clearer.Delilah - Toowomba, Australia
This song is clearly about heroin. Of course the song writer, nor the musician made this publicly known due to its heavy rotation on mainstream radio, they didn't want to give radio stations a reason not to play it.

The line "swim through your veins like a fish in the sea" is a dead give-away.

This song is not about infidelity.
Wide84 - Wisconsin, Wi
Sorry everyone but its about heroin...
"You dont know how you met and you dont know why you cant turn around and say goodbye"
Right there it states how he started using and now he cant stop...
"Swim through your veins like a fish in the sea" Sorry but thats not about someone having an affair its not like the guys semen or love can swim through veins ! Its about being on herion and how amazing it is ! "I cant give you money, I cant give you the sky, its better off if you dont ask why, im not the reason that you go astray we'll be alrigth if you dont ask me to stay"
states that the herion is what he wants he doesnt need a chick beside him.

the whole song is clearly about herion
read between the lines
Chelsey - Ponoka, Ab
yeah sorry to burst all your guys bubble but this song is most definately about heroinBrandon - Grand Island, Ne
i believe this song is about swinging lifestyleNini - Warwick, Ri
some people are just rediculous!
the song is some what about wives cheating with him and no its not about drugs rofl.

and he saying its better if all there are is i guess you could say friends with benifits thats why hes all like "its better if you dont ask me too stay" lol

some people are slow
this song is really oveous! rofl.
Kennedy - Jacksonville, Fl
There are some very persuasive arguments on this site, but I still believe it is about an affair. When he says "I'm not the reason that you go astray," I believe he is saying that it's not his fault that she is cheating, she is doing it because there is something missing from her marriage. The next line "We'll be alright if you don't ask me to stay," refers to the fact that if she stays she will ultimately end the marriage and/or cause major problems for her, her husband, and him. All of the lyrics in the song can be associated with the feeling of excitement, lust, and addiction associated with a new relationship, especially one that is extramarital. The drug arguments just don't seem to address all of the lyrics in this song logically.Jj - Poedunksville, Nc
okayy not trying to be rude, or anything, but i dont get how it has to be about drugs or affairs
why cant it be about love
he loves her so much, that shes addicting
he doesnt care what ring is on her finger because he loves her and materialistic s--t dont matter
she will never find anyone like him no matter what
idc what anyonme else thinks because i have noo idea how anyone thinks its about drugs??? so urr dumb
Alannan - Dixon, Ca
Does it really matter what its about its a good song. I've loved it since I was little and now I sing it to my son while I tuck him in...Ashley - North Bay,
ok listen the song is about drugs listen to it swim through your viens like a fish in the sea hmmmm o yea kinda like shooting up there ya goWeasel - Lakeview, Ny
this sounds very very stupid, but i heard this song on the rdio w/my dad wen i was real little, so i just think of my dad wen i hear it. but anyway, i think it's about a guy trying 2 convince a girl tht it's ok 2 luv him evn if there's no reason & evn if she's scared. ya'll can think tht it's abotu drugs if u want, but just bcuz his name's uncle kracker tht duznt mean he runs around doin drugs. or maybe it duz. but watevr.Tori - Partyin Mardi Gras Style, La
I like the affair theory better than the drug one. It just matches better, you know? It's too romantic. And also, some previous people said, who's talking if it's about drugs, the actual drug? Stupid. Maybe the song was penned with the intention of the theme to be drugs, but I think it should be an affair. It's kinda depressing either way, though.Trina - New York, Ny
i think the song was written about both an affair and about drugs, on the surface it's about an affair but it was cleverly written so that if u look deeper the words also describe what it's like to be on heroin, i don't think any of you are right or wrong about this!!Laura - Falkirk, United Kingdom
Ok, I may be going out on a limb here, but I believe this song is about different styles of music. If you watch the music video, it puts a lot of emphasis on the radio and what is coming out of it. Also, when it shows the different people, it shows what's in their minds and it's other types of music. For instance, the mechanic has the thoughts of Elvis, the young girl has thoughts of a boy band, the woman in the car thinks of a piano player (possibly Elton John or Billy Joel), and the man in the car thinks of a guy very similar to John Mellencamp. The line "you don't know how you met me, you don't know why" can mean just that: one doesn't know why he likes that music, but he does. And being a lover of music, I know all about how listening to it can get inside you: "swim through your veins like a fish in the sea". That's just what I think, and believe based on the music video.Stephen - Knoxville, Tn
If you speak english, you know this song is about cheating.Brian - Vancouver, Canada
Won't give you money/(The drug won't let you have a job because u get so addicted that u need it every hour) I can't give you the sky/(you get high and happy and away from your life, but you always go down, and u cant go as high as the sky) Your better off if you don't ask why/(You're better if you're not on heroin) I'm not the reason that you go astray And we'll be alright if you don't ask me stay (You're life isn't down the hole because of heroin, but because you choose to do it, and you'll be okay if you just dont keep getting it)Julia - Anchorage, Ak
The chick jumping around on the bed in the video is SUPER HOT!!!!Matthew - Dallas, Tx
when it says swim through yur veins like a fish in the sea means making you feel good all overSammi - Fresno, Ca
Spinner named it one of the worst songs ever but I don't think they took the drug aspect in it. With that in mind it is acctually a well writen song. Also Kid Rock co-wrote and produced the album.Austin - Smallsville, Ne
it's about an affair with drugsDude - Dudeville, Il
THIS SONG IS ABOUT SHOOTING DOPE.
LIKE WHERE HE SAID "I DONT CARE ABOUT TE RING YOU WEAR" from the ring on your arm after shooting. AND where
"swims thru your veins like a fish in the sea"
well that enugh symbloism by it self. and where
"ill be the one who tucks you in at night"
talking about the H HOW IT MAKES PEOPLE PASS/NODD OUT and people who do that cant go to sleep without it so it tucks you in at night to fall asleep.

sorry girls to face you to the truth but its not about a a girl cheating on her husband.

face it, after vietnam america became addicted to opiates. those damn azns opened our eyes now its gotten out of hand 80% of americans are addicted to opiets but no one talks about it.
Rob - Baltimore , Md
it would seem that the songs about drugs, but it doesnt relry matter does it?

Beffnee - Cornwall, England
Ok...so if indeed this song is about "drugs" so this means that the actual Heroin is singing to this person? That...really doesn't make sense to me people... I say affair, its obvious...I say.Senka - Plano, Tx
hey I was wanted to let you guys know that this song is infact about drugs, Theres a radio station here in the dallas area that had an interview with them, and the lead singer infact said it's about drugs. When asked he said something like "I wish I could tell you it was about my wife, but it's not. Then I could tell you that it was about my baby daughter, but she wasnt even thought of when I wrote this song. It's really about drugs."Anthony - Flower Mound, Tx
hey i READ ALLLLLL these comments because honestly wanted to know because ive heard both arquements before in my opinion its about drugs id like to thank - alicia, kalispell, M for clearing this up but it is also of a love affair. i think it really is about drugs but they use the relationship as a coverup. it happens all the time.

P.S. Kids Bop SUX
Zach - Ivins, Ut
He doesn't care about the ring on your finger - I feel it means he just wants to be with you whether your married or not - maybe hoping you will leave your marriage but not wanting his feelings to show.... swim through your veins like a fish in the sea - if your involved in an affair - yes it can feel like that!Katie - White Bear Lake, Mn
It is about drugs, its a well know fact that this is what it was written about by Uncle Kracker.Luke - Toowoomba, Australia
Having been there, trust me, this is about an affair. "Swim through your veins, like a fish in the sea," may sound like a drug reference, but for someone in an affair, the other person can be like an addiction, and you have to hide that "addiction." As for "I'm not the reason that you go astray," this is also explainable by an affair: women don't generally cheat because of sex, they cheat for emotional reasons, because of something wrong in their current relationship that they are trying to find elsewhere. The singer can't give her things, because the woman wouldn't be able to explain it to her husband.

Like I said, it all makes perfect sense to someone who has been there.
Lisa - Texas, Tx
ok i/m stuck inbetween becasue i read what every one else thought and yes it does is some ways refer to drugs by the verse that says "and swim in your vains like a fish in the sea" but i dont understand what drugs has to do with the verse that says "Won't give you money
I can't give you the sky
Your better off if you don't ask why
I'm not the reason that you go astray
And we'll be alright if you don't ask me stay" thats just telling her that he cant give her the world but he can give her his love and his heart. and i love this song. so that is what i think of this song.
Danielle - Athens, Pa
i definatley think that this song is about drugs and i stronly agree with alicia, kalispell, MT because her break down of the song is very acurate it reads as follows...
" belive the song is truly about drugs.written from the drugs point of view. ill break it down for you. FIRST VERSE You don't know how you met me You don't know why You can't turn around and say goodbye All you know is when I'm with you I make you free And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea (When your an Herion addict you dont care how you get it, were you get, why you get it, just as long as you get it because it makes you free from "life" and it dose "swim" through your veins) CHORUS Follow me everything is alright I'll be the one to tuck you in at night And if you Want to leave I can guarantee You won't find nobody else like me (as long as you keep on the heroin..everything is ok, it will always be there, and if you do leave..youll never find anythig that gives you the high that it can) SECOND VERSE I'm not worried bout the ring you wear Cuz as long as no one knows than nobody can care You're feeling guilty and I'm well aware But you don't look ashamed and baby I'm not scared. (First off notice he NEVER says the ring you wear on your finger. nor dose he say wedding/engagement ring. the ring he is refuring to is the ones you get on your arm from the needle when you start shooting before it starts to rot your vein. so as long as no one sees thoes marks no one will know your a herion addict so no one can care. and yea you would feel guilty about hiding such a big thing from your loved ones.) "
thanks alicia
Wonderful - Oklahoma, Oh
I can see why somebody might think that. The song is actually about having an affair. Uncle Kracker confirmed this in a radio interview several years ago.Joel - Detroit, Mi
This is a very soothing song- it gives me perspective, I don't know why.(lol)Steven - West Carrollton, Oh
Only two people commented on the following two lines:
I'm not the reason that you go astray and
We'll be all right if you don't ask me stay
And those people felt that it was referring to an affair. I believe it is an affair and I'd like someone to prove that those two lines deal with drugs. No one has yet. I challange you. :)
Jasen - Las Vegas, Nv
Not sure about the narcotics reference. Sounds like someone having an affair.Joel - Columbia, Sc
"Follow Me" is a very good song, it relates to someone i'm with. i mean i don't know how i met him. i don't know why i can't turn around and say good bye cause all i know is when i'm with him i feel free and he swims through my vains like a fish in the sea. Lol. love you fiance.Mary - San Jose, Ca
This song is most definitely about an affair. Sure you can make the first few verses apply to drugs but when you get to the part where he's telling her "Won?t give you money
I can?t give you the sky
You're better off if you don?t ask why
I?m not the reason that you go astray and
We?ll be all right if you don?t ask me to stay" has nothing to do with drugs. Think about it and get your mind off the drugs.
Angela - Newark, Nj
I think in this case, the song can fit both interpretations, but some of the lyrics that fit the affair interpratation, don't fit the heroin one.Stefanie - Rock Hill, Sc
i belive the song is truly about drugs.written from the drugs point of view. ill break it down for you.
FIRST VERSE
You don't know how you met me You don't know why
You can't turn around and say goodbye All you know is when I'm with you I make you free
And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea
(When your an Herion addict you dont care how you get it, were you get, why you get it, just as long as you get it because it makes you free from "life" and it dose "swim" through your veins)
CHORUS
Follow me everything is alright I'll be the one to tuck you in at night And if you Want to leave I can guarantee You won't find nobody else like me
(as long as you keep on the heroin..everything is ok, it will always be there, and if you do leave..youll never find anythig that gives you the high that it can)
SECOND VERSE
I'm not worried bout the ring you wear Cuz as long as no one knows than nobody can care You're feeling guilty and I'm well aware But you don't look ashamed and baby I'm not scared.
(First off notice he NEVER says the ring you wear on your finger. nor dose he say wedding/engagement ring. the ring he is refuring to is the ones you get on your arm from the needle when you start shooting before it starts to rot your vein. so as long as no one sees thoes marks no one will know your a herion addict so no one can care. and yea you would feel guilty about hiding such a big thing from your loved ones.)
Alicia - Kalispell, Mt
Confirmed from a former close "friend" of Matt's (Uncle Kracker) and his brother/manager, this song is truely about Heroin. This is not to say Uncle Kracker was addicted, or even tried, the drug. Trust me.Steve - Grosse Pointe Park, Mi
The song seems to me to clearly be about having an affair with a married women. In verse 1 the married chick doesn't know why she met, why she has to cheat on her husband, and why she can't end the affair with Kracker ("You don't know how you met me/You don't know why/You can't turn around and say goodbye"). All she is that he makes feel free and alive ("All you know is when I'm with you/I make you free/And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea"). In chorus he is saying just follow me and don't worry about the why ("Follow me everything is alright/I'll be the one to tuck you in at night"). Then he entices her to stay by saying she'll never find anyone like him again ("And if you/Want to leave I can guarantee/You won't find nobody else like me"). In verse 2 is goes on about not worrying about who knows about the affair and about feeling guilty 'cause he knows it's only about the sex, but he still wants to keep the affair going ("I'm not worried bout the ring you wear/Cuz as long as no one knows than nobody can care/You're feeling guilty and I'm well aware/But you don't look ashamed and baby I'm not scared"). In the bridge it becomes clear what the songs about. He can't give her money or he can't be her everything ("Won't give you money/I can't give you the sky") because, again, he knows it's just a sexual affair and he can't be asked to stay with her ("Your better off if you don't ask why/I'm not the reason that you go astray and/We'll be all right if you don't ask me stay"). They affair can continue if she doesn't start asking him to truely care of and love her. The only part that possibly maybe sugguests drugs is the swimming through the veins part and that doesn't have to mean H. You can't explain the other lyrics and how they fit with the drug theme. Ever since Lennon's "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" people have thought everything is about drugs. Lame.Al - La, Ca
why do we have people that are so obsessed with saying everythings about drugs? gosh!Amanda - Dover, Pa
I realy truely doubt this song has anything to do with drugs. "I'm not worried 'bout the ring you wear" obviously shows how much he loves this woman, and the risk he accepts taking. "...and swim through your veins like a fish in the sea..." is about the rush, caused by either the risk they run, possibly sex, or both.

I'll leave it at that.
Michael Jones - Berlin, Md
He meant for the song to song like it's about a relationship, but the referal of drugs is hidden in the song. He meant for it to be like this so if you look deeper into the song you will find the hidden message. This is perhaps hinting that Unkle Cracker had previously been on drugs.Hilary - Madison, Ct
You don't know how you met me
You don't know why
You can't turn around and say goodbye
All you know is when I'm with you
I make you free
And swim through your veins like a fish in the sea

excuse me. drugs for sure!
Hilary - Madison, Ct
This Song is REALLY about drugs. Most people think it is about relationships, but it is not. The words: "Follow me everything is alright
I'll be the one to tuck you in at night
And if you Want to leave I can guarantee
You won't find nobody else like me"....that is sayin drugs are what they turn to at night, and it gives that person something they can't experience anywhere else. Heroin swims through your veins like a fish in the sea.

But you can interpret it any way you like. This is really what the song is about though.
Ami - Papillion, Ne
This Song Is Not About Any Kind Of Drugs.
You Guyz R Crazy! I would reckon it would be about an afair.
But anyways who cares?
the song is awesome and uncle kracker is da bomb!
Nicole - Cave City, Ky
If this song isn't about drug addiction, than Ozzy's 'Suicide Solution' isn't about alcoholism, and Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' isn't about heroin.Brian - Pittsburgh, Pa
You must be on drugs if you think this song is about drugs. It is most definitely about an affair.Jason - Houston, Tx
This song is most definitly about an affair...no question about it....Lisa - Brock, Canada
This song is about an affair, pure and simple... why do people think all songs are about drugs? And why is that drug always Heroin?

Look at the word this about a guy and a married woman...

Oh and Kids Bop is an abomination.
Monty - Omaha, Ne
Kid Bop Kids did a cover of this song, which was altered to make it more appropriate for young children. In the altered version, the man singing is a young husband; apparently he and his new bride just eloped and their marriage is a secret from her family. Some of the lines were altered: "I'm not worried 'bout my ring you wear/'Cause as long as no one knows/Then nobody can care/You're feelin' guilty/And I'm well aware/But don't you feel ashamed/'Cause baby I'm not scared." Also, the end is changed so that he tells his wife to ask him to stay. I thought it was very strange how different the song sounded with just a few word changes. I am debating whether I like Kid Bop Kids versions of songs - they do sound cute and I don't mind my nephew listening to them, but they really bastardize the songs to make them age appropriate.Tabs - Spring, Tx
I only hear an "affair". Drugs just do not come to mind when listening to the words.Priscilla - Rutherfordton, Nc
I always thought this song was about an affair but I can see how it can relate to drugs (which all act by getting into the bloodstream (veins))Nige - Southampton, England
I think this is about drugs too because once the person is on the drugs they don't care what happens as long as they have what they wantCheryl - Ardmore, Ok
i think this is about drugs...specifically, heroin (swims through your veins). It might have been written from the drug's point of view, and when he says he doesn't care about the ring on your finger it might mean that he doesn't care that the drug use is destroying their marriage/ relationship. But whatever, it's just a theory.Alice - Never Never Land, England
The wedding ring/engagement ring/ present from boyfriend that symbolises his partners other partnerAndy - Halifax, England
i believe it is about an affair, but perhaps it has a deeper meaning....possibly drugs.Greg - Abbeville, Sc
My husband thinks the song is about drugs---you know, swims through your veins like a fish in the sea. I say, it's about an affair! He says he doesn't care about the ring on your finger. What's it really referring to?Suzie - Beaumont, Tx
