Dave Matthews originally wrote and recorded this in 1989, before DMB was formed. While practicing the song at home, he was having trouble coming with a song title. One day, Dave's younger sister Jane said that she liked the song, so Dave decided to call it "The Song That Jane Likes."

The song's lyrics reference the time that Dave Matthews worked as a bartender in Charlottesville, Virginia. (thanks, Beau - Phoenix, AZ, for above 2)
