Songfacts®:

  • This heartfelt ballad was the first promotional single of Usher's 2010 album, Raymond vs. Raymond. Later it was released as the record's fourth single.
  • Usher explained the song's origins to The New York Times March 26, 2010: "The feeling of it is if you have a true connection with somebody, no matter what happens in life, it will always come back," he said. "No matter how long it takes to make it through whatever issues pull you apart, something pulls you back together. The rest is between the lines."
  • Rico Love wrote the song's lyrics. The New York Times asked him if the line, "Like waterfalls, your hair falls down to your waist," is a reference to Usher's former girlfriend, Rozonda Thomas, Chilli of the R&B group TLC, who scored a massive international hit with 1994's "Waterfalls." Love admitted the nod was intentional: "I always thought Chilli and Usher were a great couple, so I did that to spark something," he said.
  • Usher won Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 2011 Grammy Awards for this song.
  • At Usher's Las Vegas show on July 4, 2023, he sang "There Goes My Baby" to the actress Keke Palmer, who was enjoying a night out with her friends. It got a bit intimate, which didn't sit well with Palmer's boyfriend, Darius Jackson, who saw the video and scolded her on social media, leading to quite a dust-up.

Usher responded on August 16 by releasing his next single, "Boyfriend," with Palmer in the video. In that song (written long before the Vegas show with Palmer), Usher taunts the boyfriend of the girl he's not-exactly-creeping with, telling him he's easy to find: he'll be with this dude's girl.
