Renegades Of Funk

by

Rage Against the Machine

Songfacts®:  You can leave comments about the song at the bottom of the page.

This is a tribute to various revolutionary American leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.
Pioneering rap group Africa Bambaataa And Soulsonic Force wrote this song and were the first to record it. They released it as a single in 1984.
This was the first single from Renegades, which also contains covers of songs by The Stooges, The Rolling Stones, MC5, and Devo.
This was released on election day - November 7, 2000.
The radio version is shorter than the CD version. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ)

Rage Against the Machine rocks! i love them so much and the lead singer didnt even get along with the rest of the band all that well but they still made great music and Renegades of Funk is my favorite song by them
- Kira, Bonita Springs, FL

Rage against the machine is my all time favorite band, i am a huge fan. This is a fantastic song because it gives a great tribute to all of the great renegades of their time
- Sean Hardesty, Arroyo Grande, CA
I'll second Cristin on that fact. The whole Renegades album was a tribute to other songs and bands. Check your facts buddy :)
- Frank, Hickville, GA
Actually, Dave, Tim is right. Afrika Bambaataa wrote it. Read this: http://domm.zsi.at/txt/ratm_liner2.txt
It's a product of the 80's, Rage just covered it and transformed it into their own style.
- Cristin, Boston, MA
I prefer the renegades version when it starts with 'we're renegades and it's a time and age, it's a time and age if renegades.'
- Jamie Jay, West Oxfordshire, England
Rage Against The Machine did not write "Renegades of Funk."
- Tim, Pittsburgh, PA
this song is not a tribute to anyone! renegades of funk is about being strong enough to change the way people think and not just accept that there right becos your told so!rage certainly arnt making a tribute to anyone! they worte it about themselves and those whom they associate with........ we are the renagades.
- peter rabbit, kent , MD
in the chorus there's two guitar parts, one is played off distortion and sounds real weird

The chorus was once misheard as "When a redneck needs a f***." I'm not making this up.

Armed with a childhood spent devouring books, Mike Scott's heart was stolen by the punk rock scene of 1977. Not surprisingly, he would go on to become the most literate of rockers.
