Sepultura vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera told Holland edition Aardschok/Metal Hammer in April 1991: "'Subtraction' is one of the faster songs on the album and it's got a really cool drum intro that we play backwards. Andreas Kisser [2nd Axeman] did the lyrics and it's about how people change over the years because of money or power." (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
