Neighbourhood by Space

Album: SpidersReleased: 1996Charted:
11
  • This might be considered a novelty song if it were not for soap operas such as Coronation Street and EastEnders, the former of which spawned not only "(Don't Fall Into) The Mason's Arms" but an aspiring serial killer, and the latter of which has had more than its fair share of murder, rape, child abuse and arson.

Having said that, the neighborhood created by Space sounds distinctly friendly in comparison. The serial killer is a vicar who lives at number 6-6-6, and the local recidivists hang out at number 9-9-9, or they would do if they weren't "all doing time". Presumably that would be number 9-1-1 in the United States, or perhaps they would live in a trailer?
  • The song was written by band members Tommy Scott and Franny Griffiths; it was the band's second single or their debut single depending on the status awarded to a previous release. "Neighbourhood" was released in March 1996 when it all but flopped, and again in October the same year when it reached a creditable number 11 in the UK singles chart.

Running to 3 minutes 28 seconds, it was produced by Stephen Lironi on the Gut label. >>
