Songfacts®:

  • This is what might be called a modern, arpeggiated folk hymn. The phrase, from John, 11:35 is the shortest verse in the Christian Bible but regarded by scholars as one of the most profound.

It remains to be seen if as suggested here, the Great JC foresaw the Inquisition, the burning of the saints and Hiroshima as well as his own betrayal by both Judas and Peter, but even if he hadn't, he would have had plenty on his mind in the days that followed.

Christians will probably like this for the poetry, which can be forgiven if it doesn't scan that great, but melodically this is as good as most Ralph McTell tracks. >>
