Songfacts:  You can leave comments about the song at the bottom of the page.

This was inspired by comments made by children as Nickolas Ashford walked around New York City. He heard them say, "Yo, solid!," which Ashford thought applied to the relationship he had with his wife and songwriting partner, Valerie Simpson. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL)

While many songs are about that crazy, euphoric love often found in new relationships, Ashford and Simpson on this track sing about the enduring kind of love that is needed to sustain 30+ years of marriage. The duo were married in the early '70s, and have had a very successful professional and romantic partnership.

Comments:

On SNL,They impersonated Barack and Michelle Obama, and singing Solid as Barack! I wish I taped it! maybe it will come to dvd, someday.

I love this song! This should be Don and My song! one of my favorites.
- Jennifer Harris, Grand Blanc, MI

hey, maybe he isn't the best singer, but what about that killer 'stache??? Man!! that was one manly, macho display!!
- Jeff, Austin, TX

Nick is a pretty lousy singer, for sure... :-) Their strength was in their songwriting. But there are lots of folks who can write, but not sing. Carol King is just OK; Sheryl Crow's singing amazes me -- totally surprised that this woman gets any airplay at all... but I digress. Solid as a Rock is a pretty good song for what it is.

was used in the show Arrested Development as the anthem for the Bluth Company's "Solid as a Rock" campaign

Good song but the way Nickolas Ashford sings "Build It Up" is quite irritating.
