Songfacts®:

  • Big Sean is an American hip hop artist who is known by family and government officials as Sean Michael Leonard Anderson. He was born in Santa Monica, California and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Sean signed with GOOD Music in 2007 after founder Kanye West heard him free-styling at a radio station. After the release of three official mixtapes Sean released "My Last" as lead single from his debut long player Finally Famous: The Album.
  • The song features vocals from Chris Brown and is produced by No I.D. Sean previously contributed to "S--t Got Damn" and "Glitter," two tracks on Brown's 2010 mixtape In My Zone 2. The Santa Monica native originally performed the verses and the chorus himself but after Brown showed up at one of Sean's shows, the duo hit it off and the Yeah 3x singer suggested the pair work together on new material. "He heard ['My Last'] and started singing it," Sean recalled to MTV News. "And, of course, he sounded way better than me. And he's really my homey, outside of this music thing he's really one of the true G's in the game."
  • Sean explained the song's meaning to Artist Direct: "To me, the song is definitely something quality. It's not meant to be taken too seriously or lightly, but it does have an underlying message of, 'I'm partying like it's my last, but I work so hard to party like it is.' Even in the first verse, I say, 'I grind hard and got a lot to show for it.' I'm always trying to keep it relatable to people as opposed to just a regular party song. It means a lot to me. I feel like I am telling a story in a sense, even by saying that I'm just doing better than what everybody projected. That's real. That song is dedicated to anybody whoever does really feel like that—people who are about to go party like it's their last, smoking like it's their last, having sex like it's their last, or whatever they're doing. I feel like it's a really big anthem and it has a lot of soul. One of the things I like about it is that it doesn't really follow any trends that are on the radio right now."
