Songfacts®:

  • The first single from English singer-songwriter Will Young's fifth studio album Echoes is a dance pop track produced by Richard X (Sugababes, Annie). The song was released on August 21, 2011.
  • Will Young penned the song with British pop duo Kish Mauve, whose previous credits include "2 Hearts" and "All The Lovers" for Kylie Minogue. The other co-writer was English songwriter Cathy Dennis who has achieved international success with such songs as Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," Britney Spears' "Toxic" and Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl." Dennis also had her own solo success in the early '90s including the 1991 transatlantic smash "Touch Me (All Night Long)."
  • The Radio Times asked Young if the lyrics reflect on a particular relationship? He replied: "Oh, I'm the biggest romantic. Heartache stays with me for years. I need it to write songs. I just have that melancholy, and I've had it since I was a young kid."
  • Young told The Daily Telegraph that he likes "the idea of bringing sexuality into a song in a subtle way, and slightly turning it on its head a bit." Hence in this song's video, he stands in spandex watching a couple perform gymnastics. "I like the idea of giving the audience the option to make up its own mind as to what is going on," he said.
  • Will Young feels "Jealousy" was a turning point for him. "Such a good song. It was so brilliant for me, that whole time, creatively," he told Official Charts. "That was a game-changer for me. Something unlocked in me, melodically, that I hadn't ever done before. I properly moved into pop writing. That record is my best record in terms of a body of work."
