This is a single from Mission Bell, the fourth studio album by American musician Amos Lee. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 40,000 copies sold in its first week; these sales were the lowest for a #1 debut in the Nielsen SoundScan era.
The song was inspired by an occasion in which Lee found himself at the bottom of a dark place where he had to make a choice. He explained to The Boot: "There are those times when you reach this place and it's like do you seek out a source of renewal or do you delve deeper into a world of destruction. When you're born with a shovel in your hand, you're always going to delve deeper into destruction, but in this particular moment, I sought out renewal and that's what the song is about."
Lee told The Boot he had nothing to do with the music video's concept. He said: "The video people put it together. I appreciated the story they came up with. The amount of work and effort it takes to create the world that they create is crazy. I really appreciate the amount of creative energy they put into the project for sure. At this point in my career I really feel like that letting go of that kind of thing is the best thing. If I had a clear vision on a video, I would have given it to them. I would have been very adamant about it. But I didn't, so what's the point of me trying to pour over everyone else's ideas?"
