(I Wanna Live In A Dream In My) Record Machine by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

Album: Noel Gallagher's High Flying BirdsReleased: 2011
  • This poignant acoustic ballad was written by Noel during a visit to Thailand in 2001. It was originally intended for the Oasis album Don't Believe The Truth, but it never got to a place where Noel could accept it as finished. The song was then recorded for Dig Out Your Soul but Gallagher's brother, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, never laid down the vocals during the sessions in LA. So Noel eventually re-recorded it in a different key for his first solo album to suit his voice. Noel recalled to the NME: "That was recorded Don't Believe The Truth, and the vocals never got finished. I can't remember exactly what happened, but it never got finished. And when re recorded it again for Dig Out Your Soul, I remember being in the foyer of the W hotel in Los Angeles, and Liam had just got back, and we had two days left, and I said, 'We've got to do the vocals on this today' and he said, 'No, we've got to do 'I'm Outta Time' first because that's a more important song.' And he never got round to doing it. So when it came round to do this album I thought, 'It's already around on the internet, if it doesn't come out now it never will,' so I changed the key to suit my voice and off you go."
  • Gallagher told Spin magazine how he tweaked the song for the Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds album: "Compared to the previous demos, the new version is in a different key and slightly quicker. The arrangement, melody, and words are exactly the same, though. It's about the power of music and how it can transport you to a different place, even if for just three minutes."
