Songfacts®:

  • This song is from the soundtrack to the romantic drama film W.E.. It finds Madonna singing about the pain of being in love with someone whom she compares to a great work of art such as Mona Lisa. The track plays over the end credits of the movie.
  • The song was composed by Madonna herself with American songwriters Julie Frost (Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough," Beyoncé's "Countdown"), and Jimmy Harry (Pink' "Sober," Lisa Loeb's "Single Me Out"). It was produced by British musician William Orbit, whose previous collaborations with Madonna include her Ray Of Light album.
  • The moody ballad won Best Original Song at the 2012 Golden Globes.
  • Madonna recalled during her acceptance speech at the Globes how the song came together. "[My manager Guy Oseary] harangued me for the entire time I was filming and editing my movie to write a song," she recalled. "And I said, 'Please, Guy, I'm trying to focus on being a director and I want people to pay attention to the film and I don't have time.' So then I finished the film and I started making my record and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged, 'Masterpiece,' so thank you, Guy Oseary, for being so irritating."

  • Alan from Durham City, EnglandIt sounds like Boz Scaggs's "Sierra".
  • Leo from Westminster 1, MdBeautiful Ciccone Artwork! Masterpiece is exactly that!-a ballad masterpiece. What Madonna is Crying about Here are the Impefections of Humanity. When Madonna Cries "Because After All/Nothing's Indestructible!"-I Cry Along with Her. I can Hear the Sadness in Madge's Beautiful Evita/W.E. voice and that quality is indeed Something to Remember. Masterpiece=Brilliant Ballad! Madonna=Brilliant Artist! A True Work of Ciccone Art! Madonna Rocks-and Cries!
