  • Grace Potter explained her motivation for penning this song during an episode of VH1 Storytellers. She said: "When I lost somebody recently, I know this is how I felt. And that's what a song is for. It's there to service the person who is hurting the most. It's a form of grieving really, writing song like this next song that I'm going to play for you guys. And everybody has lost someone in their lives."
  • The band recorded a second version of this song with Kenny Chesney for a bonus track on The Lion The Beast The Beat. Grace Potter previously collaborated with Chesney on the latter's hit single, "You and Tequila."
  • Potter expanded on the inspiration for the song during an interview with The Boot: "I wrote it about a dear friend who passed away who was chemically not balanced," she explained. "Sadly, everyone knew this was going to happen. They found her in a river, which was an affirmation of our deepest fears. But at the same time, people who are so imbalanced that way have this charisma that is stirring. Somebody like this person draws you in and loves the fact that they take things a little too far."
  • The song debuted on the Hot 100 after Amanda Brown, a contestant in the third season of The Voice, performed it on November 19, 2012. Amanda Brown's own version also appeared in the Hot 100 in the same week.
