Songfacts®:

  • Co-written by Glitter himself with producer Mike Leander, this is a very passable ballad. Unfortunately, Mr. Glitter will be remembered as anything but the somewhat older teenage heartthrob that he was when he recorded it way back in way back in 1973.

In November 1999, he pleaded guilty at Bristol Crown Court to 54 counts relating to indecent images of children that were found on his computer. He was given a four month sentence. On his release from prison the following January, he told an outdoor press gathering that he regretted what he had done, and wanted to get on with his life.

Five years later, then aged over sixty, he was arrested in Vietnam and charged with molesting two girls aged 10 and 11. He was given a three year sentence, and after serving that was deported from the country. On his arrival back in the UK he was required to sign the Sex Offenders' Register. Then he suffered the indignity of being hanged in a TV dramatization called The Execution Of Gary Glitter.

Set in a fictional Britain in which the death penalty had been restored, it saw him convicted of child rape, and executed. His complaint about the play to the media watchdog OfCom was dismissed.

On October 28, 2012 he was arrested in London as part of an investigation into sexual abuse claims at the BBC following the screening of a documentary about the late Jimmy Savile. >>
