Songfacts®:

  • The tension-fraught recording of The Moody Blues' Seventh Sojourn album and subsequent world tour had left the band exhausted and relationships frayed. Singer-guitarist Justin Hayward and bass guitarist John Lodge recorded the Blue Jays album during the five-year hiatus. This song was released as the lead single from the LP. Hayward recalled to ZigZag magazine December 1976: "It was an easy track to write and an easy track to record - one take. It took about an hour to write, actually."
  • The Blue Jays album was unveiled to the world in a playback at Carnegie Hall. Justin Hayward recalled to Q magazine in 1990: "It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen in my life. There's John and me in the dressing room at Carnegie Hall and the house is full and all there is on stage is a record player with a couple of spotlights on it. And they say, Ladies and gentlemen! The very first performance of Blue Jays! And then someone plonks the record on. It was ridiculous."
