Get Over It

Eagles

US Chart: 31

This is about people who go on daytime television talk shows and cry about how messed up their lives are just to get the attention. These shows proliferated in the early '90s, with people like Geraldo Rivera, Vicki Lawrence, Gordon Elliott, Marilu Henner and Carnie Wilson all getting their own shows. This is in addition to Maury Povitch, Jerry Springer and Oprah.

In the line, "The more I think about it old Billy was right, let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight," Henley is referring to William Shakespeare. (thanks, Bill - Johnstown, PA, for above 2)

This was one of 4 new songs on the Eagles reunion album. After breaking up in 1982, they got back together for a tour that set records for high ticket prices.

Hi John, I couldn't agree more. I'm pretty far right myself, an while the Eagles are much more Liberal in their music than I am, I love this song. "GET OVER IT!" There comes a time to move on! You can't continue to blame your parents or your environment for your shortcomings. I grew up in a fairly healthy home and I'm a disaster. My kids grew up in a bad situation and they are going to turn out OK, I think. larry

"I'd like to find your inner child and kick its inner ass" This from a master lyricist. "The big bad world doesn't owe you a thing," Great stuff, plays on 'the big bad wolf' and the 'wolf at the door'(another Henley reference in 'NY Minute.') The Eagles should play the Globe Theatre.
- Alan, Greene, RI

More recently than Billy Shakespeare, Billy Carter, the late brother of President Jimmy Carter, made the comment that all lawyers should be shot. His comments (numerous and colorful) were made in response to his being constantly harassed by lawyers and news hounds because of his notorious politically incorrect comments on various political and foreign affairs issues, especially following his talking the Lybian government into loaning him a few million dollars. Remember "Billy's Beer"?
- Buster, Xanadu, TN

It certainly applies to many areas of modern America. I work in the criminal justice system and see a bunch of people that need to hear Get Over It.
- Chris, Lake Texoma, TX

great song. who cares what it's supposed to mean?
- christina, fopo, NY

It is true that "Billy Shakespeare" wrote "let's kill all the lawyers, kill em tonight". But I think that Robert Denero said it best when he played Slylock in The Merchant of Venice. I have been listening to "ROCK" since Bill Haley did rock around the clock. In my personal opinion the Eagles are the quintessential band. They can do it all. John is right that they are a little political sometimes, but where would we be now if we didnt have Dillon?
- Kirk Fuller, Gadsden, United States

The main message in the song is about the huge issue in our legal issue in the US, where people seem to sue for just about everything. While talk shows are mentioned in the first verse (as posted above), the second verse blasts the lawsuits, etc. (You say you haven't been the same since you had your little crash But you might feel better if I gave you some cash The more I think about it, Old Billy was right Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight You don't want to work, you want to live like a king But the big, bad world doesn't owe you a thing)
- Mermi, NYC, NY

Not the greatest sounding Eagles song but it SPEAKS volumes hahaha
- Mike, Hueytown , AL

Glen and Don probably cranked this gem out waiting for Walsh to show up for rehearsal. I was totally overwhelmed by the MTV reunion show and hope these guys go on together for a long, long time.
- Bill, Downers Grove, IL

always got me laughing when i was kid, because of that guitar part after they sing "get over it" now, i LOVE this song, it maybe not politically correct, but it always gets me to smile. oh yeah, and the eagles broke up in 1980, NOT 1982: '82 was when it was told to the media that they were no longer functioning as a band. this was also the time frey and henley put out their 1st solo albums.
- Sara MacKenzie, Middle of Nowhere, FL

This song should have been a huge hit for the Eagles. I think that the reason it wasn't is that at the time it wasn't politically correct. To many people were comfortable blaiming someone else for their circumstances or their behavior. They didn't want to hear the message that life is about personal responsibility. My favorite line from the song; "I'd like to find your inner child and kick it's little a.." Amen to that!

You don't wanna work, you wanna live like a king, but the big bad word doesn't owe you a thing! Get Over It! That moron who sued McDonalds because she spilled hot coffee on herself (Oh yeah, I'm sure it's not hot... It's coffee. What kind of idiot needs a little warning to know that coffee is very hot?) needs to hear this song.
- Nathan, Austin, TX

I have to say that Smooth by Santana, Love Will Keep Us Alive and Get Over by The Eagles are probably the best songs of the 90s. Im 14 and i absolutely hate rap and disco. Just hate it. These songs have to be the best songs of the 90s by far.
- Ray, Stockton, NJ

This songs been on my iPOD for 2 years and i've never really listened to it, but i watched the Hell Freezes Over DVD and i love this song.
- Ray, Stockton, NJ

Man, I love this song. It really FACILITATES my love of the Eagles. They have a definite liberal streak, and while I respect them for their tendency to keep politics out of shows, it always bothers me when I, as a true conservative, have to be at odds with them for that. This song, melodically, is far from my favorite from the Eagles, but the premise just puts me at the same level as my favorite band.
- John, Millersville, MD

These veterans of pop rock are so good live it's ridiculous. There's no subsitute for talent and experience.
- Dougie, Orlando, FL

the farewell tour part 1 was awesome!
