Songfacts®:

  • This song introduces John Legend's fourth solo album Love in the Future, which was produced by his long-term collaborators Kanye West and Dave Tozer. Legend told Billboard magazine that his greatest songwriting influence for the project was his fiancée Chrissy Teigen. "It sounds like a lot of cooks in the kitchen, but the main cooks were the three of us," the singer said of working with West and Tozer. "We made something I think really presents where I am in my life right now. Lyrically, the title kind of embraces where I'm heading in life, I'm about to get married. It's the beginning of something new, I'm optimistic about it, and you can hear that in the tone of the tracks. I wanted to make a really great modern soul album."
  • When Legend played a preview of Love in the Future at a showcase in London, he revealed that the title of the LP was dedicated to Chrissy Teigen, adding: "Some of you know I'm about to get married soon, so the title has something to do with that and the sentiment of some of the songs."

He added: "It makes sense for where I am right now. Isn't that right Chrissy?," to which she quipped: "No more cheating songs!"
  • Tozer told SonicScoop about the song's production: "This one is just me and John, cut live," he said. "I'm playing a 1950s style guitar with a very vibey, murky sound, with John singing in the live room."

"There's some cool voodoo to this track," Tozer added, "and I wanted it to have the character of an old record, so I ended up printing it to vinyl, then I recorded back in from vinyl. So the introduction is a vinyl acetate recorded at a high-quality conversion. It's not me putting a plug-in effect on it - this is actually a record!"
  • Legend explained to The Independent that this song is, "about the optimism of beginning something new with someone. I was about to get married at the time."
