Songfacts®:

  • The title track of Marina and the Diamonds third album, this was unveiled by Marina Diamandis on Twitter complete with an image and the caption "LA DOLCE VITA," referencing a lyric from the song. Its premiere on October 10, 2014 coincided with Diamandis' 29th birthday.
  • The song is full of tongue-in-cheek, fruit-as-sex metaphors as Diamindis sings of what she has to offer to a guy. We hear that she is "plump and ripe" and "waiting to be picked."
  • The song's danceable production was provided by David Kosten (Bat for Lashes, Everything Everything) and finds Marina and the Diamonds returning to her quirky electro-pop roots.
  • Hinting at the frolicsome nature of this song, the title is deliberately misspelled "froot," as in the breakfast cereal Froot Loops. The artwork for the single is a play on the Froot Loops logo. Marina explained to The Guardian she spelt it that way as she "just liked the way it looked." The singer added: "I didn't want it to be the traditional spelling because I thought it looked too serious. I like merging the natural with the synthetic."
  • The video was directed by Chino Moya, whose other credits include "Digital Witness" for St. Vincent and "Listen To Your Love" by Mona.
  • Diamandis found this to be a difficult song to write. She explained to American Songwriter magazine the reason was, "because it was so long and the structure was so unorthodox."
  • The Cure drummer Jason Cooper plays on this song and the rest of the album. Marina told The Guardian: "When I first started recording it I was doing it the electronic way but all of the drums sounded s--t, so I got in a real drummer."

"Basically, for a long time I've been trying to translate how I am on stage on to a record and before, because of working with co-writers and stuff, people just wanted to do it electronically. But this was all written by me and me alone."
