In The Light by Led Zeppelin

Album: Physical GraffitiReleased: 1975
  • Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones composed most of this on a synthesizer. They never played the song live because Jones could not reproduce the synthesizer sound outside the studio.
  • Near the beginning of the song, Jimmy Page played his guitar with a violin bow. He also used the bow on "Dazed And Confused" and "How Many More Times." Talking about the song in the BBC book The Guitar Greats, Page said: "Once the vocal lines and phrasing were sorted out, you'd know where not to play, which was as important as knowing when you should play. With 'In The Light,' for instance, we knew exactly what its construction was going to be, but nevertheless, I had no idea at the time that John Paul Jones was going to come up with such an amazing synthesizer intro, plus there's all the bowed guitars at the beginning as well, to give the overall drone effect. We did quite a few things with drones on, like 'In The Evening' and all that, but when he did that start for 'In The Light' it was just unbelievable."
  • This was based on a song Led Zeppelin had written called "In The Morning." At one point, it was titled Originally called "Take Me Home."
  • A bootlegged demo of this song exists with different lyrics and opening. In that version, John Paul Jones opens with a simple sythesizer and Robert Plant starts with the lines, "Sunshine brings laughter..." (thanks, Adrian - Gettysburg, PA)
  • This was one of Jimmy Page's favorite songs on Physical Graffiti. In the interviews preceding the release of the album, he spoke of the song as the follow-up to "Stairway To Heaven." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

A band I was in covered this song. Such an awesome piece of music. The whole album is a masterpiece that I listened to from start to finish so many times while I was learning to be a musician/bass player.Guy - Benson, Nc
Just picked up this Physical Graffiti Double LP at a yard sale for two bucks. Brought it home to play, and listened to this song entirely for the first time. I wish i didnt put this song to the back of my mind because of the slow intro. All I have to say is that the guitar riff is the dirtiest I have ever heard.Tyler - Schenevus , Ny
I guess this was how they interpreted how to write a ballad. Pretty flippin' awesome interpretation!!Nate - New York, Ny
Like alot of you I am a big Zeppelin fan, though I was definitely sa much bigger fan when I was younger and did not have responsiblities. I am in my mid thirties, so they were before my time really, but I gravitated towards them when I was in high school. I think I somehow believed that their music was my own little secret. I would hear their music as a youth and think "woah", so many of their songs have this effect. Often I would share the music with my friends, and if they didn't like it (or like it as much as I did), I thought to myself "they dont get it". Especially the mellow songs which really hit deep.

So when I come on here and I see a posting from a young person with so much passion and enjoyment for the music I break out in a smile. I was once that young guy totally and deeply committed to their vibe. It is great to hear the passion all over again from some of the posters, it was once new to me too, and even when it is not new it often feels new from time to time. Enjoy your journey, it is really fun to explore their catalogue and those initial emotions you have toward the music are what many of us felt, hold that passion fr as long as you can.

As for this song. Definitely their most underrated song. A very unique layer of sound and shift from the mellow organ to heavy bass riff. It feels like a song that should be listened to alone, but you want to share it with someone. With so much evil and rage in this world, on the tv, in the newspapers, I listen to this and it takes me away. Provides some hope, however small. I know someone somewhere is listening to it at that moment and thinking some of the same things I am. Life on earth could be so much more peaceful and enjoyable if only people "got it".

Love the layered guitars in the last few bars as Plant improvs!John - Beltsville, Md
This was another one of my absolute favorite songs back in high school in the 80's. I can't believe I missed the person it was for until now...glad i found u...Laura - Stone Mtn, Ga
I'm only 16 years old, and I have been loving Led Zeppelin since I was 14. I absolutely LOOOVE everything Led Zeppelin has ever done, and If you were to ask me what my favorite song was, In The Light would win. Robert Plant's voice is so mysterious in this song, I would die for it. Also, the synth and the heaving duh duh chhh guitar parts are eerie and magical. I love how at the end it gets a little softer and Robert just yells out 'Light, Light Light, In the Light'. It is pure Beauty. So underrated, But it is the best in my view.Britt - Boston, Ma
I have been a Led Zeppelin fan for 25 years (I am 38 years old). In my opinion, this is probably the greatest (and most under-rated songs of all-time). In the Light, You Will find the Road...Christopher - Dallas, Tx
It's so hard to speculate, because every Zepp album is great in it's own right------yet Physical Graffiti may just be their Masterpiece.
It's hard to even pick a favorite off this one; they're all so good.
Reed - New Ulm, Mn
This song pretty much validates that Physical Graffiti is the best album ever conceived.Schweet - Cincinnati, Oh
Absolute favorite LZ song, which is on top of a long list of favs. Their all awesome, but Everyone needs a light.Rick - Atlanta, Ga
I just LOVE this song.
Great spooky beginning, and Plant's vocals are simply wonderful.
Truly a shame that they never took it live.
Oldpink - New Castle, In
Awesome song!!! We actually covered this song in a band I played in a few years back. PG is Zep's best along with Zep 3.Guy - Benson, Nc
That's a real shame they could not play this one live. Plant was excited about the idea of playing it, too. This could have been a regular at concerts, like "Kashmir" and "Trampled Underfoot".Peter Griffin - Quahog, Ri
The weird sound is the hurdy gurdy instrument very interesting piece of equipment check it out see bOnOvO sexta liveGary - Winter Peg, Mb
This song is overlooked all the time by people who thinks its a waste of time to listen to the whole thing, but this song is AMAZAZING! especially towards the end when Plant sings "In the Liiiiiiight, Everybody needs the Liiiiiight oo yaya!!" FABULOUSJohn - Somewhere In, Ma
I love the riff to it. Slow and drudgey.Longlivezep - Baltimore, Md
Great tune I love that begingBill - Topeka, Ks
in context of the entire "Physical Graffitti" album, "In The Light" is the calm after the storm that is "Kashmir". The lightened mood and lyrics of hope have definitely inspired me in my life. its just an overall beautiful song. so heavy but at the same time very bright. contest me anyone. i dare you!!Mike - Riverside, Ca
robert plant's voice is awesome(as always) and drums are very cool.I really loved this song from the first time i heard it.the lyrics are very interesting.I agree with Matt, it's a very under rated song!led zeppelin are the best:))Maria - Athens, Greece
Physical Graffiti is my personal favorite album by Led Zeppelin.Stan - Hop Bottom , Pa
Physical Grafitti's my personal favorite also, especially since Ten Years Gone is one of my favorite songs.Rob - Wilkes-barre, Pa
Found an alternate studio version online - sounds great especially John Paul Jones' mellotron. The opening sounds really creepy - check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj9G4TBPzqE.Taal - -
This song is awesome. I liked it more the Stairway to Heaven. Just not many people know this song well. I thought personally that Physical Grafitti was their best album. Anybody agree with me?Jt - Tullahoma, Tn
To John: No it is not a waltz. It is a steady 4/4, with such a heavy beat. John Bonham may not be the hardest, but he is definetly the heaviest. It is just great how they change from A minor to A major when the "In the light" part comes in.Theo - Oslo, Norway
vocals and lyrics are probly soma the best ive ever heard..such a powerful song!!Spencer - Richmond, Va
I have a few outtakes of In the Light and by far the best is the version found on Physically Present. It has a very eerie "Dracula-like" opening by JPJ and great lyrics and vocals from Robert. It's an excellent bootleg of Phys. Graff. sessions and I recommend it to any who are new to collecting the sessions.Chris - Whitesboro, Ny
This is my favorite Zep song with a creepy intro and off my favorite Zep album.Chris - Sunnyvale, Ca
To David from Orlando, Plant sings "sure 'nuff they do" (sure enough they do) at 7:04. So it's everybody needs the light - sure enough they do. Fantastic song.Taal - Australia
This has been bugging me for awhile: what exactly is Plant saying at the 7:04 mark in this song?David - Orlando, Fl
Wait, they're not just awesome! They're sexy! Tge vicals I mean.Stefanie - Rock Hill, Sc
This is probably one of the best songs on Physical Grafiti. I also think it's very underrated.Stefanie Magura - Rock Hill, Sc
The original was not called "Take Me Home". "Take Me Home" is a COMPLETELY different song that was left off "Physical Graffiti". What kind of song fact place is this?

I could provide you with the music if you want to hear.
Peter - Everett, Ma
I like when the music stops and it is the key board of JPJ, then John Bonham cones in, and Jimmy Page just attacks the strings. I first heard this song when i was 12 and still two years later it is one of my favorites by Zep!Steve - Oroville, Ca
Yeah i totally agree with Aisha right before he starts the In the light part at the end the guitar just like, kicks in and then its just insane optimismNelson - Durham, Nc

this song was last christmas... when i was in a adrenaline, alcohol-induced fit. and i borke my hand punching a cement wall, "in the liiiieiight..everybody needs the liiieight"Nick - Baton Rouge, La
I considered myself a diehard Zeppelin fan for 4 years, but I had never fully listened to "In The Light" since I have ADD with music, but last week I listened to this song on vinyl and I LOST MY MIND, this song is absolutely breathtaking, not to mention a huge turn-on!!! Plant's voice has so much soul and it creates this vibe running through my body that cannot be described or compared. This is by far my all-time favourite Zepp song and I will recommend it to anyone who listens or doesnt listen to this great rock band..Aisha - Regina, Canada
I absolutely adore this song. The passion expressed by Plant towards the end is moving, completing his message of "hope" and triumph. When the guitar rings in with that heavy, dropping riff, does the beat become a waltz? It's a dum dum CH, repeating. Thanks for any imput. "When love is pain, it can devour you."John - Flanders, Nj
I too agree with Matt, too. I used to think that Achilles' Last Stand was one of their best songs but this one takes the cake!Zach - ..., Pa
This song reminds me of John Williams, it's very epic and theatrical. If I was on the Deathstar this would be playing in the background.Mike - Santa Cruz, Ca
i agree with matt, this is one of the coolest zep songs and it has an amazing message...amazing lyrics...many a time i have listening to this song when feeling down and felt less alone because of it...plant, you do share my load-everyday. Thank God for Led ZeppelinAc - Winnipeg, Canada
There's also a rare studio outtake of this which can be found online. It's got a cool opening by John Paul Jones and completely different, nonsensical lyrics from Robert Plant. It's really interesting.Adrian - Wilmington, De
Great very under rated songMatt - Chicago, Il
