Songfacts®:

  • Originally written by John Lennon in 1979, this was eventually overdubbed and released by the surviving Beatles in 1996. In 2014 English recording artist Tom Odell released a cover version as the soundtrack to the department store John Lewis' 2014 Christmas advertisement. The commercial tells the cute story of a little boy who finds a companion for his penguin friend Monty at Christmas.
  • John Lewis' previous festive adverts have seen stripped-down covers of classic tracks by Taken By Trees, Ellie Goulding, Slow Moving Millie, Gabrielle Aplin and Lily Allen respectively.
