Hot Stuff by Donna Summer

  • Donna Summer was not a wild child in real life, but she often played a libidinous vixen in her songs. In "Hot Stuff," she's calling every guy she knows looking for some action.
  • This disco classic was written by Pete Bellotte, Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey. Bellotte co-wrote a few other hits for Summer, including "Love To Love You Baby" and "Heaven Knows." Faltermeyer had a solo hit in 1984 with "Axel F," and Forsey's credits include "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for Simple Minds and "Shakedown" for Bob Seger.
  • This was Summer's second #1 hit on the Hot 100; her first was her disco cover of "MacArthur Park."
  • Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who is a prolific session musician and at one point was a member of Steely Dan, did the guitar solo.
  • Summer won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance on this song. It was the first year the award was given out; she beat out the very non-disco Rickie Lee Jones, Tanya Tucker, Carly Simon and Bonnie Raitt.
  • This was used in the movie The Full Monty in a scene where the guys hear it on the radio and get the idea to take it all off in their show.
  • The Bad Girls album was recorded at Rusk Sound Studios in Los Angeles, with two of this song's writers playing many of the instruments: Keith Forsey was on drums and Harold Faltermeyer played keyboards. The bass player on this song was Scott Edwards, who also played on the song "Bad Girls" and many other Disco hits. Edwards told us: "On 'Hot Stuff,' they had the chord charts. They said on that one, 'Do the traditional disco thing,' bass wise. It tried to have a little more musicality, but it was getting into that standardized disco mode, the usual drum and bass part. The earlier stuff was more musical, and I guess that's why I count it as a little bit better."

Fantastic #1 hit for the late, great Donna Summer. It was a monster disco hit in the disco era, but I loved it because of Donna's vocals & the exceptional instrumentals. Yes indeed, she knocked this one outa the ballpark !! Ohhhhhhhh.Mmmmm.Moanin' Lisa - Chillicothe Mo.
On April 15th 1979, "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #79; and on May 27th it peaked at #1 (for 3 non-consecutive weeks) and spent 21 weeks on the Top 100 (and for 14 of those 21 weeks it was on the Top 10)...
It also reached #1 in Canada and Australia and #3 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
In a seven month period between Nov. 5th, 1978 and July 8th, 1979 she had three records reach #1 on the Top 100; "MacArthur Park" for 3 weeks, this one for 3 weeks, and "Bad Girls" for 5 weeks...

Steve Allen, the comedian, read the lyrics to "Hot Stuff" out loud at the Grammy's in 79 or 80. It was hysterical! The spoken words were much more crazy sounding than the sung words!Dean - Hoover, Al
What fantastic memories of a #1 Donna Summer hit from 1979! Wonderful info in the other comments shown. In 1979, I worked & lived in Joplin, Mo. when Hot Stuff hit #1. It was a really great hit & a great summer for disco. That was the summer I met my wonderful husband Tarantula. Even though Donna Summer is gone, we will always remain her fans! Rock on!Bubblesk - Memphis, Tn
#Ekristheh from Halath: She actually sings "hot love" more than once throughout the song. It was funny to hear the background vocals going more like "haaat haaat haaat stove, haat haat haat..." than the proper "hot stuff", though.Carmelo - Genova, Italy
On June 16th, 1979 "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer became #1 for two weeks, then "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward took over the top spot for two weeks. But Donna Summer reclaimed No. 1 with "Bad Girls" and stayed there for the next five weeks!!!Barry - Sauquoit, Ny
The great guitar solo was performed by former Doobie Brothers guitarist Jeff Baxter. See http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/donnasummer/articles/story/6595948/hot_stuffPatrick - Luxembourg, Luxembourg
easily one of the Top 5 disco songs ever.Jeff - Austin, Tx
I actually auditioned or a part in the movie "The Full Monty" but unfortunately I didn't get a big part!!!! I was an extra..... the music from, this movie is CLASSIC!!!!Derek - Cambridge, New Zealand
When I first heard this song, I thought she was saying "hot love" rather than "hot stuff". It is still an effort not to hear "hot love".Ekristheh - Halath, United States
i really like this song but at first i thought she said "I wanna bring a white man back home" it kinda sounds like it.Julian - Anaheim, Ca
Mr. Pearce is a little off in his recollection. This song was heard in The Full Monty when they were standing in line at the unemployment office after they'd been rehearsing, and (it's been a while) but I think after they'd been busted at dress rehearsal. The notion to "go all the way" was Gaz's off the top of his head while they were posting bills around town and happened upon the two skanky women who wondered what was so great about their show, given that the Chippendales had recently been in town for a show.Shell - Riverdale, Ga
i like this song because i like disco and the movie the full monty ...Matthieu - Fra,ce, Fl
