Songfacts®:

  • Simple Minds lead singer Jim Kerr wrote this song after reading a story about Polish political prisoners who had been in Russia since the end of WWII. "There was an interview with wives of guys that had been away for a long time, taken away, and some of the beautiful quotations that the women had used became sort of the background for that song," Kerr said in our interview.
  • This was the third single from Once Upon A Time, following "Alive and Kicking" and "Sanctify Yourself." All three singles hit the US Top 40, following their first American chart entry, Don't You (Forget About Me), which was released in 1985 and featured on The Breakfast Club soundtrack.
  • Sue Hadjopoulos was brought in to play percussion on this track. She has also played on albums by Joe Jackson and Cyndi Lauper.
