Songfacts®:

  • This dreamy country-pop single about a first love was written by Jennifer Pappas, JP Rende and Kathryn Raio. Kry told Taste of Country why she decided to record the tune: "When I first heard the song, I immediately connected with it, because it's such a relatable topic," she explained. "It talks about falling in love for the first time, and all those feelings that you have that you've never experienced before, and you meet this person and you're going through all of these things with them for the first time, and it's just a really fun and kind of nostalgic song. It kind of tells a story."
  • Fireflies are winged beetles, that are conspicuous for lighting up as a means to attract mates or prey.
Kry describes here the experience of first love burning bright in the starry skies as being, "like fireflies." Other songs that use the insect as a metaphor include ones by Faith Hill (about about childhood dreams and possibility), Owl City (about insomnia), Leona Lewis (about suicide) and Sixpence None The Richer (includes the lyric "Strike up the band, and make the fireflies dance").
