Songfacts®:

  • The closing track on Kintsugi finds frontman Ben Gibbard singing of Atlas realizing the world was smaller than the one he carried on his back. The reference to the Greek mythological figure, who was condemned to bear the heavens on his shoulders, is a metaphor for the way today's mass media consumption has shrunk the world.
  • Ben Gibbard said of the track to Digital Spy: "The last album, we ended with basically what was our 'Shiny Happy People' and nobody really liked that so much! So we decided it was best to go back to something more quiet and pothole. 'Binary Sea' is a song I'm really fond of and I feel like it serves an unintended conclusionary service on the album."
