Songfacts®:

  • Writing in Melody Maker, July 19, 1969, Chris Welch said "Curly" was an obvious success for The Move.

Written by Roy Wood, this somewhat off-beat track was by no means an obvious anything; backed by "This Time Tomorrow," it was released the following month and was indeed a hit, reaching number 12 in the UK. >>

  • The song is about a boy who is stifled by his conservative father, but sees the world in a new way when a girl enters his life. It turns out she is just toying with him, and leaves him the fool.
  • Answering questions about this song, the group's drummer Bev Bevan would sometimes say that Curly was lead singer Carl Wayne's pet pig. This made an interesting anecdote, but was not true.
  • Roy Wood played the recorder on this song, which was overdubbed and multitracked.
