Songfacts®:

  • "La Rosalie" was written by the prolific songwriter Pierre-Jean de Béranger (1780-1857).

It translates rather badly into English, eg:

    Rosalie, Rosalie, poor me,
Every day, every day, I think of you,
It's from where my blanket, your great disdain
I am alone in sleep, I grieve.

    Rosalie, Rosalie, plump comforter
You kill me, I'm crazy, I'm done
I remember my blanket, I remember
She danced, she danced, she danced well

The song's main claim to fame is that in 1957 the new Malaysian national anthem, "Negaraku," was based on it. >>

  • The melody for this song became popular in various French territories, and made its way to Malaysia, where in 1928 is was adapted into a song called "Terang Boelan" ("Bright Moon"). The lyrics were later altered to form the song "Negaraku," which became the Malaysian national anthem.
