Songfacts®:

  • This was written and recorded by Bob Seger for his Against The Wind album. Released as the third single, it peaked at #14 on the Hot 100.
  • The song features organ, synthesizer and piano played by Little Feat co-founder Bill Payne. As well as being Little Feat's pianist, Payne is a sought-after studio musician who has also recorded with The Doobie Brothers and many other bands The keyboardist is considered to be one of the finest American piano rock and blues music artists, who is especially noted for his trademark barrelhouse blues piano.
  • Kid Rock sampled this for the acoustic intro of "Amen," a track from his Rock and Roll Jesus album.
  • Country artist Frankie Ballard has covered Bob Seger throughout his career when gigging in bars and in the honky tonks. He laid down a rocking version of this tune for his 2016 El Rio album. He explained to CMT News what made this the Bob Seger song to record. "The guy in that song is just so courageous," he said. "He's saying this to the girl, 'I know you've got to go do your thing but eventually, we'll be together. I feel that strong and I know it in my soul.'"

"And there's something really cool about that. I've felt that way. I know what that feels like and how courageous it is to say that," Ballard added. "I love the confidence in that song."
  • Sometimes you have to lose a syllable for your art. "You'll accompany me" doesn't quite fit, so Seger contracted it to "Accomp'ny," and expressed it that way in the song title. Barbra Streisand famously dropped a syll'ble on her song "The Way We Were," singing, "Mem'ries, like the corners of my mind..."
