Songfacts®:

  • This is Ian Hunter's tribute to David Bowie, who famously wrote and produced Mott The Hoople's breakthrough single "All The Young Dudes" in 1972. Hunter told Mojo:

"I was writing a song called Lady when (Bowie died). Over three days, it changed into Dandy. The song's from the point of view of a fan in the Ziggy period. England was pretty drab then, and going to see David took you out of that (and) into this technicolour light. Then you caught the last bus home. That's the best line in the song."

Hunter added: "I hadn't seen David since Station to Station. He went his way and I went mine."
