This song is sometimes translated into the artist simply needing sexual release, but it's truly about the sexual frustrations he cannot overcome. (thanks, Sarah - Delaware, OH)
Here's another theory: It could represent the voice inside a rapist's head. "Help me get Away from myself" and "You can have my isolation" implies that after he rapes his victim he's willing to go to jail (isolation). The line, "You can have my absence of faith you can have my everything" means his whole life is gone once in prison. It is basically a song about an obsession that one cannot control. (thanks, Bridgette - Los Angeles, CA)
A remix of this song is playing during the opening credits of the movie Se7en starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kevin Spacey. This version can be found on the CD-single "Closer To God." (thanks, Stephen - Cupertino, CA)
The video was directed by Mark Romanek, who had directed the clips for Madonna's "Rain
" and Lenny Kravitz' "Are You Gonna Go My Way
Romanek says that the video for "Closer" was shot on a hand-cranked camera from 1919, and was made "for art's sake." Like the song, the video is raw and disturbing, complete with bondage, nudity, and a monkey strapped to a crucifix. When MTV showed interest, they edited it for broadcast and the video went in rotation on the network. As for the monkey, Romanek insists that it was never harmed, and that an ASPCA representative was on the set to ensure its safety.
