  • Scott Lucas, the lead guitarist and singer of the alt rock band Local H, wrote the song after the death of a close friend. He explained in an A.V. Club interview: "Wrote the lyrics for this on the way to a wake for my friend Lexi. It's a funeral song, but I didn't want it to be morose. I wanted it to be unsentimental and kind of triumphant, and above all else, unapologetic. Anything less would've felt like lying." >>

  • In the lyrics, Lucas remembers the happier, carefree times of youth (Think back in '98, Drunk parties at your place) before recalling when he got the news of his friend's death:

    It was a friend through a text

    But he takes comfort in the fact that although death is inevitable for everyone, you have to live life while you can.
