Songfacts®:

  • This funk 'n' roll track finds Gambino singing from the perspective of a rioter.

    Everyone, everyone!
Get down, baby, get down, baby
    Fly, fly, fly, high

Gambino is in a dangerous situation and he urges other nearby to "get down" while he lobs missiles at those attempting to quell the riot.
  • Most of the songs on Awaken, My Love! call back the sounds and themes of funk music pioneers Sly Stone and George Clinton. Indeed, when titling this cut it could be assumed that Gambino had the 1971 Sly & the Family Stone album There's a Riot Goin' On in mind.
  • This contains the only sample on Awaken, My Love! lifting the groove from Funkadelic's "Good to Your Earhole."
  • Funkadelic leader George Clinton told HipHopDX.com he was thrilled that Gambino was keeping his P-Funk music alive.

"I just heard it one time, and I like the songs," he said. "I'm aware of his music and know he's into P-Funk so I know it's going to be some good music. I haven't had a chance to get all the way into it. When I did hear it, it sounded like a cross between P-Funk and Prince influence. I'm proud that he's into the funk and glad him and others are bringing some new funk back."
