Songfacts®:

  • J. Cole penned this ballad for the woman who made him "fall in love for the first time." He raps about that feeling you get when you fall hook, line and sinker for someone.

    Catch me, don't you—
Catch me, don't you catch me
I've fallen in love for the first time
    I wanna cry
And I ain't even tryna fight it

Jermaine Cole first met Melissa Heholt in the mid-2000s at St. John's University, where they were both students. Cole majored there in communications and business, while Melissa obtained a M.S. in childhood education. The couple have been together ever since and are now married, though it is not known when the famously private couple tied the knot.
  • As well drawing inspiration from Cole's own life, 4 Your Eyez Only also contains the story of a childhood friend of the North Carolina rapper. He is named as James McMillan Jr in "Change," a nom de plume used by Cole the sake of privacy. On this track Cole parallels his and James's experiences of finding love. Sadly, as the Fayetteville artist details elsewhere, his friend's story ends in a tragic manner.
  • This is part one of a two part song where Cole opens up about the people "more important" than him. The second half of the suite is dedicated to his newborn son.
