Songfacts®:

  • McCain wrote his debut single, "Solitude," about a childhood friend who was kept in drug rehab for years against his will. "It's a sad story, but it's a true story," McCain told the Pennsylvania newspaper The Morning Call. "It's one of these things where I wrote the song primarily to deal with my own anger at the situation and for my friend, who got a pretty raw deal. I never knew it was going to be as popular as it was. But everywhere I go, somebody comes up to me, either once a night or twice a night, and says, 'It happened to me,' or 'It happened to my best friend.'"

McCain was inspired by his friend's determination to "grab the world by the horns and learn how to live" rather than dwell on the time he lost.
  • The song features Hootie and the Blowfish singer and fellow South Carolinian Darius Rucker, along with Hootie guitarist Mark Bryan. >>
