Songfacts®:

  • This ballad finds Trace Adkins reflecting on growing up and cutting down on his hell-raising. He still likes to drink whiskey, but "now it's just a little watered down." The song was written by Matt Jenkins (Kenny Chesney and Pink's "Setting the World on Fire"), Trevor Rosen (Band Perry's "Better Dig Two") and Shane McAnally (Miranda Lambert's "Mama's Broken Heart").
  • Adkins explained why he recorded the song: "When I first heard 'Watered Down,' I felt an immediate connection with what I wanted to say," he explained. "A man comes to a point in his life where he begins to reflect on his past and what he's learned, and that's what fueled this song. If you've led the kind of life I've led, at some point you have to temper your vices."
