Songfacts®:

  • Eric Church sings here about a guy from a small town who is lamenting his former lover who left him due to an insatiable case of wanderlust. She wanted to experience a big city buzz, but the guy believes he can get the same buzz living the small town life.

Lit up like that one stop light
    Across from that welcome sign
Ever since you caught that out-there bug
I catch me a 'round here buzz
  • The song has thermic similarities to past Church heartbreak hits such as "Give Me Back My Hometown" where he sung of revisiting his hometown as he tries to get over his ex.
  • Church wrote the song with his guitarist Jeff Hyde and singer-songwriter Luke Dick. The same trio completed "Kill a Word" the same day. Jeff Hyde recalled to The Boot:

"The three of us got together over at Luke's house, and we finished 'Kill a Word' pretty quick ... and then we had - that was right around lunchtime, so we still had a few hours left, and Eric took this idea for 'Round Here Buzz,' and we got on that one pretty quick, too."
  • Church had the idea for the song's chorus and first verse when he and his co-writers got together, but during their writing session, they "changed it some and tweaked it some."

"The song needed to just be played. I felt like it had been kinda written and had been boxed in a little bit with everybody saying, 'It's a hit song,'" Church recalled "The soul of the song, to me, is just us playing it."
  • According to Eric Church, the song has a nostalgic, heartbreaking feel. "I've done a few of these songs in my career; this nostalgic kind of song about the guy that kind of wishes things were different than they are," said the artist. "I know a lot of people like that and like this from where I'm from. I'm from a small town, and I've just seen this. I think part of the reason, I feel like we're pretty good at this kind of song, and I think part of it is because I've seen it, I've felt it. It's a motive to me."
  • Eric Church recalled in a behind-the-scenes video how nervous Luke Dick was when they kept tweaking the song. "I think it's funny that Luke came by to make sure we weren't messing up the song," the singer remembered with a laugh. "I fully feel like he left thinking we had messed up the song. [That look of] panic, it was more panic than concern."
  • The music clip was directed by Reid Long, who received an ACM Award for Video of the Year for "Mr. Misunderstood." The visual again features Mickey Smay, the teenager from the "Mr. Misunderstood" and "Record Year" videos.

  • AnonymousActually this song’s a sequel to record year. It’s about a man who’s girlfriend left him to go chase her dreams in the big city and he’s stuck in the same city they grew up in.
