Songfacts®:

  • Sundays are typically a pleasant time of rest and leisure, but not here. Morrissey describes these Sundays as "silent and gray."

The song takes place at an English seaside resort town (portrayed in the video as Southend-on-Sea) during low season, when there are no tourists and hardly anyone around, especially on Sundays. It's so bad that he's awaiting Armageddon to put this place out of its misery.
  • Morrissey drew lyrical inspiration from the 1957 novel On the Beach by Nevil Shute, which describes a group of people in Melbourne awaiting nuclear fallout. Morrissey drew on this for the line, "A strange dust lands on your hands."
  • Viva Hate was Morrissey's first solo album, coming just after the breakup of his group, The Smiths. The melody for "Everyday Is Like Sunday" came from Stephen Street, who produced the track. Street sent the track to The Smiths, and when the band broke up, Morrissey recruited him to produce his album.
  • The Pretenders covered this song for the soundtrack of the 1995 movie Boys on the Side. Another popular cover is by Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, who released his version on the 2005 tribute album, Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey.
