This was Mariah Carey's first single, it was released in late May 1990. The song debuted at #73, but 2 months later, in August, spent 4 weeks at the #1 spot. The orchestral ballad showcased Carey's outrageous vocal range and the video provided a great look at the singer, with lots of close-ups. Carey built off the song's success and became the top selling female artist of the '90s.
Mariah wrote this with keyboard player Ben Margulies when she was 17 years old. She was working as a waitress when they started writing songs together.
This won the 1990 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. Carey also won the Best New Artist Grammy for that year - a far better choice than the previous winner, Milli Vanilli.
The album sold over 17 million of copies around the world and included three other US #1 singles: "Love Takes Time," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry." (thanks, Carlos - Buenos Aires, Argentina, for all above)

What a memorable first single for an artist! This, along with Mariah's "Dreamlover" stand out as my two favorite Mariah Carey songs.

15 years later, Mariah is still cranking out hits. She's currently at #1 on Billboard with her latest (and 17th number 1) Don't Forget About Us.

I love this song so much!! She has had numerous hits and albums over the past 15 years, but I think this is still one of my faves. It has a retro 50s shuffle sounding rhythym that is so cool and her vocals are impeccable.
