My Humps by The Black Eyed Peas

Album: Monkey BusinessReleased: 2005Charted:

  • This song is about a woman with a great body and how she uses it to her advantage. It features their female vocalist Fergie in defiant sex-kitten mode, teasing the guys gawking her in the club and threatening to start some drama if they touch it. Will.i.am plays the role of her enabler, asking what she's going to do with those humps of hers. The song stood out for its lyrical inanity, and proved that a good beat can overcome lyrics like "my hump, my hump, my lovely little lumps."
  • This samples an '80s Techno song called "I Need A Freak" by Sexual Harassment. "I Need A Freak" was written by Cleveland, Ohio DJ Orrin Lynn Tolliver Jr. and recorded by him and his concept band Sexual Harassment at friend James McCants' studio. McCant registered the song with rights management agency BMI and agreed to pay Tolliver 75% of royalties, but later denied this. Despite Tolliver sending McCant a cease and desist letter, he offered the track for sampling, with the Black Eyed Peas among those to use it. In June 2011 Tolliver was awarded damages of over $1.2 million in a court case over the improper sampling of his song.
  • There's brief moment of sincerity near the end of the song when Will tells Fergie, "Let's spend time not money." He quickly starts singing about mixing her milk with his Cocoa Puffs, however, which is a reference to sex. LL Cool J made a whole song of cereal/sex metaphors - including Cocoa Puffs - on his 1990 song "Milky Cereal."
  • Originally, Black Eyed Peas' song "Don't Lie" was released as a the first single from Monkey Business, but it didn't go over well and radio stations started playing this instead. As a result, lots of people downloaded the song and it became a huge hit with minimal promotion. >>

  • By our count, the phrase "My Hump(s)" is repeated 34 times.
  • This won Black Eyed Peas a Grammy in the Best Pop Duo or Group With Vocal category. >>

  • In 2007, Alanis Morissette recorded a slow, sultry version with a video poking fun at the original. It became a youtube phenomenon, and showcased a humorous side of Alanis.
  • Will.i.am originally wrote this breast-themed song for the Pussycat Dolls.
  • Will.i.am admitted to MTV News that he has grown tired of playing the saucy song at concerts. He said, "Before... it was like, 'We know we gotta play (hit songs) 'Pump It' and 'Let's Get It Started.' We used to do 'Let's Get It Started' at the end, because that was our big finale, which didn't really make sense. And for a while, (we did) 'My Humps' and then it got to the point where we didn't want to play 'My Humps' no more. You know, 'cause 'I met a girl down at the disco' - I just didn't want to say that no more, lyrically. It wasn't like my best lyrically. But it was fun. It wasn't lyrical miracles, but the beat was rocking, so we throw the beat in there and just let the beat linger."
  • The lyrics to this song were voted as the worst in dance music. In a poll conducted by the UK Global Gathering dance music festival in July 2012, 22% of the voters selected "My Humps." German techno act Scooter took second place at 18% with "Nassaja," where they sing: "It's not a bird, it's not a plane. It must be Dave who's on the train."

This is utterly fantastic, this is my favorite song to dance to when I am out clubbing with Sinitta. I also quite like to do the Jedward jump to So Macho, :D (thats my teeth)Simon Cowell - La, Ca
allyz rite ....."humps" is the ass of course, and "lumps" are the breasts. duh. this song is nice when you first heard it but now its overplayed and somehow the song became just plain boring ... but somtemez i like to listen 2 itHailey - New York, Ny

what's happened with music today??
all musicians talk about are sex and getting booty!
Kateri - Albany, Ny
Mel from S.A. , i believe we would get on quite well! But I would have to say that When The Music's Over is possibly the best song ever written...and untouched by human hands to this day hahaNady - Adelaide, Australia
This song was at the right place at the right time. It's like that haircut you had in highschool-cool at the time but looking back kind of dumb.Austin - Smallsville, new England, --
Wowwww! Bob Saget says: Blades of Glory says it all!Bobsaget - Bellville, Sd
This song is one of many that are destroying America. There is no deeper meaning. It does not provoke any pensive thinking such as the album"The Wall" or songs like stairway to heaven. It has no profund message such as those by Bob Dylan. I hope that anyone who actually likes this song is just going through a phase and will realize how dumb they were. If not, they'd probably be a popular president.Bc - Hunterdon, Nj
I know it's sex to the extreme, but I just love the beats! I don't know why!Shannon - Lynbrook, Ny
I have a friend who listens to this kind of music and doesn't give it a second thought, but when I played Fiddle About from the Who's rock opera, Tommy, he was disgusted. It's like come on, how does "I'm glad you won't see or hear me as I fiddle about, fiddle about" compare to "All that ass inside them jeans?
I'm a make, make, make, make you scream"? I know Fiddle About is about child molestation but still, they're both about sex, although my humps is more explicit.
Reggie - Santa A, Ca
song's got a throw...nice to dance too...very explicit lyrics..rich people are not really fools..no one is going to buy her a outfit of d&g or fendi just for a fling...shes highly mistaken..oh boy! this is just a song...Sum Sum - New Delhi
i sorta like this song. . .but as my freinds back in calfornia said, "a true music lover would watch the music video with th volume off"

:)
Yoseph - Cupertino, Ca
Ok you people need to get a life!!I happen to love the song. And get over the freak'n lyrics cause the whole world is sexual like that.Sara - Greer, Sc
This is a wonderful song, but I'm not really allowed to listen it. For obvious reasons. It seems to be about a girl (Fergie Fergeuson) who uses her hot bod to get "fancy ices" and attention from guys. The song has terrible morals, but the beat is infectuous and, as usual, Fergies vocals are fantasic. I give this song an A+.Katykat - Wadsworth, Oh
I think that this is for writing what you think the song is about, not about how gross or inappropriate you think the song is. Honestly, the kids of today love this type of music, it's a free world, we get to choose what we listen to. And there's nothing to worry about because most kids don't go out and have sex just because a song says its good. There's only like 3 non-virgins in my school right now. And I'm in high school. In a city. People in these days, like songs that have a good beat, with words that are easy to remember, and honestly, sex songs are the easiest to remember. If you think this song is bad, don't listen to Play by David Banner, or Bring out the freak in you by Lil Rob, because you would die listening to them. I seriously think parents need to get an open mind. After all, your the ones who had sex. And besides sex is just another part of life. EVERYBODYS going to have it. That's my opinion on this whole thing. My opinion on the song is that I LOVED it for like the first month, then they over-played it, and now I can't stand it. Bye!:)Melissa - Brandon, Canada
This song makes me feel grossed out. I don't really like this song because all it's about is sex and Fergie's...personal parts. Like anyone would really wanna hear about female anatomy. Someone should really tell these BEP "It's female anatomy! Get over it!" Oops I oversaid female anatomy. I guess I got carried away. My bad. But the voices in this song are also very bad. And for guys this song might not be a very big deal but to girls I find it...offending! What if little kids heard this song?!?...picture it! This song should be dissapproved by the media! And to think, it made it #5 on Now 21!(for those who don't know, 'Now' soundtracks are the best 20 new songs) Why did this have to become a hit?!?! The only thing I like about this song is the rythym and beat. If I had to rate it, I'd say that this song BARELY deserves 1 out of 5 stars. (And for people who love this song, don't hate me for voicing my opinion.)Hope - Some City, Mi
This is the most juvenile thing I've ever heard. Honestly, I feel embarrassed for Fergie. I can't believe she agreed to perform such childish crap!Lori - St. Jacob, Il
this song is terrible, as my brother would say : "this song has the musical depth of my toe nail"Doug - Balintore, Scotland
poor BEP!!! bad lyrics, but good rhythmCarlos - Lima, Peru
okay...so music has gone down from the classics of pink floyd/deep purple/the doors/creedence clearwater revival/etc...i am such an avid follower of the old music, but when at parties...its not the same when you dirty dance with a guy to 'comfortably numb'...its the situation! i mean, at parties i listen to all the dance music...how about the song 'never say never' to all you modern-hating-music people...witht the lyrics 'i might like you better if we slept together'...another one that is great to listen to at parties...im 16, and i tell you there is nothing more powering than dancing to this...its not about the degredation of women...its about the power they have over men!...but by the way...riders on the storm (the doors) was the best song ever written and a modern remix MUTILATED it!Mel - South Australia, Australia
this song has been played alot but all good songs are!!
i think this song is fun to dance to, we just ended a dance at my boyfriends highschool were this song played like three times, its a fun song to dance to even if you dont like the words, the video isnt exactly what i would have chosen, but i dont see anyone dissing these people about there video making better ones, so enough said!!
Veronica - Lakeport, Ca
This song is very disappointing.Amanda - Sdovuhsd, Mi
I think all you people who don't like this song are completely retarded! While the music video was slightly disapointing, the song is great! My Humps is one of the best songs BEP has ever written! My friends and I love it and I just want to get up and dance every time I hear it!Caitlin - Upper Township, Nj
I agree that this is the worst song ever! It's about a guy checking out a girl's body and it is NOT a good song to play. The Black Eyed Peas should keep their songs to themselves! This song is an extremely horrible song. It's disgusting how people can have such sick minds. Little kids who hear this on the radio might not listen to the words and just like the beat. What will their parents say? What kind of person are you to like such a song? This song just makes me feel gross and uncomfortable. It makes me mad and I feel like giving the Black Eyed Peas a good kick, that's what they desreve. Such a disgusting song. Ewwww! I'm gonna puke. What happened to Coldplay, Switchfoot, Relient K., and stuff? Huh?Sapphire - Denver, Co
I think this is the worst song ive ever heard. Annoying beat, stupid lyrics, and Fergi is disgusting. She needs to be potty trained before she is allowed to perform. Horrible song, i cant emphasize that enough.Mike - Phoenix, Az
I love the BEP, but I hate this song and video, as it is one of the worst songs I have ever heard. Only way it would be worse is if Ashlee Simpson was singing on it. Plus how is this about Muslim?Yuya - Kyoto, Japan
This is so ridiculous. If it's about hinduism, then what's with the rest of the song? No offense, but they just took advantage of a few people's dirty minds to get a hit.Jacqueline - Detroit, Mi
After reading an article in Q magazine, I learned that this song is basicaly focused on Fergie and her life style. Her "hump" means her left forearm that represent s tranquility. Asyou should obviously know fergie is a well known hindu, and "hump" means the left forearm. The lumps are based on a car accident that fergie was involved in as a 16 year old. she was driving along a road in her yellow vokswagon, when she crashed into a tree all because of a lump. she hates that lump even to this very day. she also talks about the struggle of with being a conservative/liberal hindu. it is a hindu who is conservative and liberal at the same time. people even threw rocks at her at school, beacause of this.Deep Thinka - Aberden, Wa
overplayed but still a good dancing song to dance with your gilrfriend (wink wink) anyway i didn't quite get the point of the music video and this song is stupid but quite a guilty pleasure but both the song and the video ecspceially are both innapropiate for kids but i do like the pump it video because furgi dosen't act like as much as a slutJoe - Chicago, Ar
This song is dumb and overplayed. It makes me question if it was just a coincidence that the Black Eyed Peas became hypocritical sellouts the moment Fergie (who looks like a guy) came into the picture.A.j. - Chicago, Il
Just goes to show kids, you DON'T need talent!David - Port Hawkesbury, Canada
worst song ever madeJoey D - Detroit, Mi
I remember a day when talent is what sold. What is this? It's just a beat you can freak to-that's not talent. Music is ruined, rock is dead, I heaven't seen anything out there that's worth listening to in a few years, and the Black Eyed Peas are talenless hypocrits. I miss GOOD music.Marko - Clarence, Ny
Sex sells. In this case rap stars are sell outs.Nooxara - Albany, Ak
The retarded culmination of a retarded career from terminally retarded band.Joe - Minneapolis, Mn
I like it, the music video is awesome. Fergie is so hott.Addison - Versailles, Ky
I just hate how any thing that has a ton of sex appeal in it will become a hit!Rick - Humboldt, Ia
I think this song is terrible. I personally do not like rap. But I do understand what people say that rap is not all about sex and violence. Its just that sex sells. So rappers always have some sort of sex in there songs. Im not saying i do not like songs about sex either. I really like Foxtrot by the Bloodhound Gang. But i always see the exact same stuff in the majority of rap videos.

1. Half dressed women.
2. A expensive vehicle, be it a Cadilac or Limo.
3. Some form of smoke.
4. The rapper showing off his riches.

I'm not saying that rap sucks and if anyone here had any manners they would not say it either. I like mint chip ice cream. You may not. Does that mean that mint chip ice cream sucks even though about half the world likes it? No, its all a matter of preference. You can like rap, rock, dance, techno, or country. Its all a matter of preference. Just do not be something your not. (I do not like posers)
Brian - London, Canada
this song sucks!!!!! rap sucks! sincere music like the beatles, u2, coldplay, jimi hendrix, cream, and anybody who has talent and passion. THIS SONG MAKES me SOOOO mad! all its about is sex and have u ever noticed that all rappers do it take a word and make it sexual? rap sucks, it has no morals either.Sam - Provo, Ut
I believe Dr. Snodgrass wins this topic.Truefrailty - Orange Park, Fl
Awesome Beat for young kids to like but it is very sexual as in " Make you work work make you work"Taylor - Bradenton, Fl
This song is awsome I LOVE ITSummer - Winson -salem, Nc
Most recent, and arguably best example of all the degradation and lack of talent hip hop hasJohn - Woburn, Ma
on vh1 they said the song is to make fun of how stupid boys areAlex - Gaithersburg, Md
The lyrics of this song make me sick. In "Where is the love?", the Black Eyed Peas sing the lyrics "Wrong information always shown by the media, negative images is the main criteria, infecting the young minds faster than bacteria, kids wanna act like what they see in the cinemas. Whatever happened to the values of humanity?" That's what I want to know. Whatever happened to the values of humanity? Overtly sexual songs like this digust me. I wish musicians would show some dignity.Valerie - Evansville, In
This song has a great beat. But the music Video has nothing to do with to what fergie is saying in the song. I love the song it is so cool!!! But the music video..............not really.Eileen - San Diego, Ca
This song is clearly about Fergie's personal relationship with her all black family and the difficulties she encountered growing up as a White Anglo-Saxon Jew. Fergie was first introduced to Judaism in her 7th grade camping trip to the Taj Mahal where she simultaneously had her first encounter with janism. After reflecting on the Janric texts for several minutes, she heard Yahweh speak to her. Supposedly the words she heard were so powerful she immediately went into a trance and was unable to speak. At this time she was also struck deaf and blind. She got lost from the rest of her class and wandered the indian countryside for years. Due to her state she was able to reflect on all aspects of Judaism and became well versed in the torah and Kabballa. Somehow she ended up in fron of a temple in NYC 10 years later, where she regained all her sense and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. One of those guys from the Black Eyed Pees discovered her singing in an Off-Off broadway production of Yentil and immediately signed her to the group. With her new found fame and fortunw she promised to spread the word of Yahweh. My Humps...are the Humps are bumps in life that we all have to face....the Lady Lumps? Why thats the word of god present in every single one of us and that we were put on this earth to bring light into the world. Also theres some stuff int there about the rebuilding of the third temple. If u listen carefully youll get what im saying.Dr. Snodgrass - Ireland, Md
