San Tropez by Pink Floyd

Album: MeddleReleased: 1971
  • The album was loosely based on Pink Floyd's life around this time. The whole band went to the island San Tropez with their then-girlfriends and had a great peaceful time, hence the peaceful nature of this song and the title. >>

Drake, I vote for San Tropez in France. I don't think our ST here in Cali ranks high enough to merit mention in a Floyd song. That's my untutored opinion based on a long-held assumption and nothing concrete. Others may be able to point to an interview or documented story relating to events such as "Pink Floyd were recording in San Tropez on the Riviera..."Randy Leeds - Los Angeles
Mike from Stratford, Free Four is on Obscured by Clouds. And about this song: at first I thought it was following the same idea as Money (DSOTM), but now I'm not so sure. It's nice, but I personally love the peaceful A Pillow of Winds and the genius of Echoes.Robert - Why?
There are only two places that I know could be the San Tropez they're talking about: The one in Spain or the one in San Diego. Can someone please tell me which one it is so I could relate to the song better?Drake - Huntington Beach, Ca
jean from paris is right. this song is about a popular tourist site in southern france where the band must have had a good time. im glad to have shared the same experience mixing red bull and vodka sitting near the beach listening to this song. it was awesome :)Rich - Mercedes, Tx
PS, interesting bit about Wright and Ellington, ty ScottMike - Stratford, Ct
Listened to "Meddle" endlessly in the late 70s, "Echoes" the best. I remember there was a Pink Floyd movie made when they were in the studio doing "Dark Side," cause it showed studio shots and song clips from it, and they were set up playing outside some I think Greek ruins. "San Tropez" a completely out-of-character song, light and breezy. Was "Free Four" on this or another, I forget - liked that also from early Floyd.Mike - Stratford, Ct
Roger does Jazz?
Still, I like this one, even if it is the joker in the pack for Floyd.
The very worst two songs in their entire canon include the Watersless Floyd "Dogs of War" and post-Syd "It Would Be So Nice."
Don't diss on this song, 'cause those two REALLY suck!

San Tropez is not an island. It's a village whose real name is Saint Tropez; iT4S ON THE fRENCH RIVIERAJean - Paris, France
Well I think it's the best song on Meddle because every time I listen to it wether mad or sad it makes me smile for some reason and all of a sudden I feel great. thats what a good song should always do.Erik - Kc, Mo
Although this song is dominated by Wright's piano (and even a great jazzy solo by him), this was one of the first cases where Waters had written an entire song (on acoustic guitar) and brought it to the group complete with no changes necessary. Wright was a big fan of Duke Ellington. He said Duke's concert in London was the only time in his life that he stood in line for a ticket!Scott - Portland, Or
Meddle is my favourite Pink Floyd album too - because the lyrics aren't depressing!Michael - Oxford, England
Meddle is my fave Floyd album-not one duff track.Keith - Hastings, England
I agree with Yuya. Except for "One of These Days". And "Fearless"... well, I pretty much think all the songs are great. Even "Seamus", for the humor.Tom - Norman, Ok
I think the line, "If you're alone I'll come ho-ho-home" might reflect an open relationship arrangement with the woman being addressed.Fyodor - Denver, Co
I thought they seemed more "real" when they mixed nice stuff like this in with the scary stuff. Cause y'know, life is both, it's not just one or the other. They started to seem more self-conscious starting with Dark Side when everything had to be gloomy.Fyodor - Denver, Co
this for me is the 2nd best song on meddle.Yuya - Kyoto, Japan
