This song is about the implausible conviction that no matter where you are, or what you are doing, nothing means much without "the one." (thanks, Melissa Mandall - Long Branch, NJ)
Comments:
I hear it as the singer is trying comfort his troubled lover who is retreating into a inner world he can't see and tries to understand. Perhaps the suggestion is that, we all experience this inherent lonliness of our subjective world. He's trying to see into this world, but can only get so close, which is part of the human condition. None of us are supermen. Perhaps the positive message of caring, loyalty and just being there for someone for reasons that can't be expressed is even more important in some way.

On Storyteller, Dave talks about how the meaning of this song could have changed, if you linked it to 9/11. He said music is like art, once you show it off... everyone owns it, and can interpurit for themselves.
