Songfacts®:

  • This song is about lovers running from the law together, sort of like a Bonnie And Clyde romance story. Though it talks about the lovers ultimately dying in a hail of bullets, it is still romantic in that the characters were so in love with each other. >>

  • Deeper down in the meaning is that he and his lover are both killed, but he ends up in purgatory, somewhere between life and death, and to get to his lover, he has to kill 1000 men. This song is telling the story of how they died; on the album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, the song "Drowning Lessons" also ties in with this song, with the lyric, "A thousand bodies piled up, I never thought would be enough, to show you just what I've been thinking."
  • Lead singer Gerard Way was trying to show his wife/girlfriend how much she means to him; he wrote this song to make up for the songs he wrote about her being killed. In the inlay for I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, Gerard wrote, "To K: I'm sorry I write all these songs about killing you, I hope the last track makes up for it." >>

  • While re-listening to the album in 2013, Gerard tweeted: "The music from 'Demolition Lovers' is inspired by a Bobby Womack song, and a Helium B-side called 'I Am A Witch,' which taught me guitar."
  • My Chemical Romance performed "Demolition Lovers" for the first time in 18 years when they took to the stage on September 20, 2022 in Newark, New Jersey. The song hadn't featured in the band's setlist since June 2004.

  • AnonymousOH YEAHHH!!!!
  • Lol Idk from Germanythis song was the soundtrack of my last nightmare
  • AnonymousI'm just in shock cause i just discovered "A fine day to die" by Bathory and the beginning sounds so similar to "Demolition lovers". I really don't know whether mcr got inspired by that, but even if they did, I'm wondering how could they manage to handle a black metal melody so well to turn it into a sad, soft and romantic song.
  • Olivia from VirginiaI love this song, its perfect and it has a deep meaning..you just have to look at the lyrics closely.
  • LirielMy interpretation is that it’s about two lovers running away to the desert together:)

  • Victoria from Brisbane, AustraliaAnd also - kyle, eastbourne, England
I'd like to point out that I Brought you my bullets is the same as You brought me your love. The whole album is titled "I brought you my bullets, you brought me your love"
  • Victoria from Brisbane, AustraliaOkay, first of all Drowning Lessons is NOT on Revenge it is song 3 on bullets, and secondly, I don't know about you guy's but I seriously think this song is like a Bonnie and Clyde romance, they are so in love they would even kill for one another and die than be without them. I think its a sweet song (:
  • Britany from Fort Atkinson, WiThis song makes me think of me an my boyfriend.. An ironicly he's the one that me hooked on the song in the first place.. He's 23 and I'm 16 an everyone frowns apon that fact theirs only really a handful of people that really don't think its that bad.. An before I was with him I always had plns to move to arizona.. An he always tells me were gonna runn away some day an escape this town.. Cuz theirs just so many problems with the people around here and its really hard for us to be together cuz of that.. An he's the one I want to spend my life with.. I mean were getting married in a year or two.. We've already made plans about that.. But this song everytime I hear it I think of arizona and the day well run away together ^-^ ily samm
  • Todd from Metropolois, ScTO me, the whole album is about two lovers who are no longer together but still love each other.
perhaps society wouldn't all ow them to be together. Vampires invade the town and the two run in to each other amongst the havoc, and together escape, the boy telling the girl "i'll never let them hurt, i promise" (my fav lyric) i believe that in Drowning Lessons they are married while on the run. i gather this from the various wedding refernces. In headfirst they think they've gotten away from the vampires that are chasind them, and rejoice, (like when the knights eat the minstrel in Monty Python.)That night they camp in an old abandoned mansion, and for a while the man leaves the girl. he returns to find her bitten by a vampire and in a trance. in utter agony, he shoots her, knowing that he is saving her from something worse. eventually wierdo docters pour in, having heard the gunshot, and take her away. the boy sees her while the docters try to save her. the effects of the vampire bite have not yet taken effect, and she tells him she loves him, then dies. the boy goes off to take revenge on the vampire that did it. (please imagine him striding down a road at 5:oo in the morning with a gun in his hand the next time you listen to THE BEST DAY EVER)
he kills the vampire, but is still not at peace.
In the song Demolition Lovers he kills himself.
WOW, that was pretty long! if any cares, I'm off to post my interpetation of 3CHEERSFORSWEETESTREVENGE on Helena. so if u enjoyed this, or if you're still reading, please feel free to go read it!
  • Bobett from Co, CoEverytime i hear this song i think of two people who wou;d kill the whole world just to show eachother how strong thier love is. And at the same time its soo romanctic =^.^= MCR PWNS!!
  • Michelle from Vancouver, BcI love this song, it's so romantic, yet sad. It creates such a beautiful scene in your mind. I listen to it over and over again with getting bored. MCR Rocks! :)
  • Amber from Birmingham, AlThis is my favorite song ever because of the imagery that the song provides. The part where it says that they are holding hands as they die and when they die it starts snowing in the desert as if the sky is mourning their love.
  • Sophie from London, EnglandI always think of this song as a sort of story. I imagine that both of the lovers feel that they can't love in this world so they both drive off together (Take to the highway), they park up, make love for the last time then kill each other with a gun. Thats how I imagine it anyway, It's probably not true. This song is simply beautiful
  • Loz from Perth, Australiathis song is really awesome,

it kind of ties in with early sunsets over monreville, as wellas drowning lessons.

    sort.. of.....
  • Ed from Rugby, EnglandI think its about how love should really feel.
Forget any literal meaning or story telling behind it, its about the deidcation, fierce loyalty, and just when you love someone so much, no matter what you put each other through, no matter what happens in the world, you will keep hold of them.
That every second you are alive, you are showing them how much they mean.

If you think about someone with this song, and TRUELY mean it, i would say that is love.

Love is a term thats being overused, this song brings it all back to life. For me, this is the definition of love.

And although the lyrics sorta post an ugly image, there is something so beautiful about them too.
  • Kyle from Eastbourne, EnglandWould just like to point out Drowning Lessons is from I Brought You My Bullets aswell, not You Gave Me Your Love, not Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge.
  • Amber from New York, Nydamn i luv this song
  • Astrozombie from ChchMy absolute favourite song. hand in mine into your icy blues..wow. Gerard wrote this song about a girlfrend he had at the time. doesnt this song just make you want to go to the dessert, in a convertable with that one special person..lol well i dunno..it means a lot to me
  • Chy from Btown, FlHAHAHA the girl doesn't die though the guy only thinks she does so he gives up his soul and has to kill a thousand evil men to get her back... love is an ironic thing
  • Yoseph from Cupertino, CaI thought this song was about bonnie and clyde.
  • Lauren from Sheffield, EnglandThe artwork for "3 Cheers" (two bloody faces) is by Gerard Way and is called Demolition Lovers 2
  • Skye from Tampa, FlThe song is basically the beginning of the theme for Three Cheers. They are deeply in love. He has some mafia or drug relations. He turns on them, so he has to run away. While running away, they are found (in a desert) and there is a gun fight. They die, and then Three Cheers comes in. But, if you don't want to get all technical in concepts like that, it's a love song.
  • Mike from Petersham, Mai love the beat and the lyrics to this song. its a terrific song and band!
  • Caroline from Montreal, Canadai think that "demolition lovers" means that the love between the two lovers is so powerful and deep that it destroy them, make them vulnerable.
this song is really awesome and almost makes me cry (i never cry, or rarely, that's why I said almost). One of the best song MCR wrote.
  • Ilse Serna from Empalme, Sonora, MexicoI think we all agree that MCR has a lot of talent. This song just proves it. This song is beautiful in a freaky kind of way.
  • Simone from Redwood City, Cai love this song soooo much. Every time i listen to it, it makes me want to cry.Its a song thats just so melodic. I love the way it tells a story as to all of the other songs by My Chemical Romance.I heard that the songs on I Brought You My Bullets,You Brought Me Your Love had to do with his relationship with some girl and the song Demolition Lovers was a song to apologize for the other songs he wrote that offended her or something like that. I wish i could be sung that song to. If some one sings you that song, and means it, you are luckiest person alive and that you will know you are loved. That is why i really love the song Demolition Lovers.
  • Avalon from London, Englandi love this song. i think it might be one of the only songs that manages to make me cry- helena does that to me as well. the lyrics are so meaningful and beautiful, i want it played at my wedding
  • Meagan from Lebanon, OhI believe that this song is about two lovers. The title 'Demolition Lovers' can mean numerous things. But, to me it means that they're love is most likely destroying the things around them. Whether it be friends or family, or breaking the law. The lyrics are beautiful. They love eachother so much they die together, ending everyone elses pain. It's true love. In a pool of blood.
  • Elizabeth from J-ville, FlNO, its about two lovers who are very deeply in love but shunned by the rest of the world because of it. so then the boy tells the girl that they can run away together and be happier elsewhere. they die, though...
  • Meow from Jordan, United StatesBut what does 'demolition lovers' mean?
Demolition means the destruction of buildings, but what do the words together mean?
  • Mercedes from St. Marys, CanadaThis song is also about the two lovers, knowing they are going to die if they stay and face the law, so they chose to die together, in love, rather then spend the rest of their lives running.
