Songfacts®:

  • Joe Sample, who was the keyboard player in The Crusaders, wrote this with Will Jennings, who has written lyrics for Jimmy Buffett, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Peter Wolf and many others, as well as the theme songs for the movies Titanic and An Officer And A Gentleman. According to Jennings, writing for other artists means getting the feel of what they want to do, where they're coming from and what their life has been. In many cases, he spends a lot of time with the artist before writing the songs.
  • In our interview with Will Jennings, the lyricist explained: "'I'm Moving On' came out my many talks with B. B. over the years - The Crusaders and I wrote an album Midnight Believer for B.B. in 1978, another album, Take It Home, in 1979 and Joe Sample and I wrote half the songs for the 1985 album There Is Always One More Time, the other half being written largely by Doc Pomus and Dr. John. The lyric is self-explanatory. You wear out a place and you say goodbye and you move on."
  • When Blood Sweat & Tears' first album was entering the charts, they found themselves in the Greenwich Village district at the Garrick Theater (next door to Cafe Au Go Go) at the same time that Frank Zappa and the Mother of Invention, The Flag, and B. B. King were in the neighborhood. So BS&T and B.B. King ended up on stage jamming together after hours. As told in Al Kooper's Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards, this private performance by B.B. King was a show-stopper: "After ten minutes he took it down, and the audience went nuts. Even if we had had the foresight to record it, I don't think anyone would've believed it. Elvin Bishop was in the audience and he later concluded that, indeed, it was the best he remembered ever hearing B.B. King play."
