Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Dave Townsend in 1974 while his girlfriend was away on holiday. He recorded it on an album for Island records which was never released. A year later one of the Shadows Bruce Welch, who was by this time also a producer, was playing some demo tapes he'd been given. He came across this song and immediately spotted its potential. Welch played it to Richard and they recorded it and released it as a single in 1976. It gave Richard his first UK Top-20 hit in over 2 years.
  • On the BBC Sold On Song website, Richard is quoted: "I think it's one of the nicest songs I've ever made. When I heard his version it was terrific, so we just stole the whole thing. He was pleased to have that happen. I mean it could have been anybody. It would have been a hit."
  • In a December 2006 poll of over 20,000 BBC Radio 2 listeners, this was voted their favorite Cliff Richard song. The record received twice as many votes as any other Cliff song in a Top 20 that includes nine #1s. >>

  • Paula from Aurora, CoArt Garfunkels version is way better than any of the others that I have heard. Should have been a hit for him.
  • Peterm from Birmingham, United KingdomAlways gave (still gives) a real polished performance does Cliff. Got married in '76, then spent our first married year apart looking after our careers (not easy, looking back) so the lyrics sort of relevant. Enjoyed the song anyway.
  • David from Taunton, United KingdomI used to Live with Daves parents in Bishops Hull, mid 70's he was a great guy. The girl the song was about is still around and lives in Milverton, about 6 miles from Bishops Hull. There were some great bands around in Taunton then and it was a bit of a music haven. Would still like to know what happened to "Luxury Liners"
  • Stafler from Durban, South Africai wonder if he was really seen by children crying
  • Mark from Dublin, Irelandwhenever the fanclus around the world hav a poll for there favourite cliff song miss you nights always comes out on top,as each year passes it gets even more popular for cliff fans, the only competition the song gets every year in the cliff polls is a b side track called "ocean deep" another beautiful ballad, these two tracks are the highlight of any cliff concert thanks to the lights and specal effects cliff uses which is prob the reason why they are so popular,i dont agree theat art garfunkels version is better,he does a very nice version but sorry art this song belongs to cliff!!!
  • Stu from Suffern, NyThis song was also covered by Art Garfunkel on his Fate for Breakfast album (1979). As great as Cliff's original release is, Art's is an even better, improved version.
  • Alan from Singapore, SingaporeThis song was also covered by Marie Osmond of The Osmonds fame
