Songfacts®:

  • The sad and caustic lyrics are referring to the breakup of a love affair. It is not known if lead singer Annie Lennox is referring to the acrimonious break up with her husband a few years earlier. The words may also be aimed at her former lover and fellow band member Dave Stewart, who wrote the music and produced the track. The We Too Are One album was the duo's last together for 10 years. The relationship between Lennox and Stewart was becoming increasingly strained and they needed to spend time apart.
  • "Don't Ask Me Why" was released as a single from We Too Are One, their last album before a long hiatus. The song ended up being their last chart entry in America, although they had several more in their native UK.
