Songfacts:  You can leave comments about the song at the bottom of the page.

This song written by Sandi Thom and Tom Gilbert is an idealistic paean to a simpler lo-tech age, when people cared enough to form movements such as flower power in 1969 and Punk Rock in 1977. It is thought that Tom Gilbert is a a pseudonym for her manager Ian Brown but Sandi Thom has denied this.

The inspiration for the song came to Sandi Thom when after her mobile phone was stolen she thought how simple life was when we weren't so reliant on technology: "When not everybody drove a car, when music really mattered, and radio was king."

This song was originally released as a CD single on Viking Legacy records in October 2005. However the song only began to take off when Thom began webcasting her material to the world from her Tooting basement flat. Between February 24 and March 16 2006, she webcast 21 concerts showcasing her songs from her home. The audience for the first day was around 65, but by mid March it had increased to 70,000 with viewers from all over the world. As a result of the publicity, she gained a recording contract from Sony and this song was re-released. It was the first webcast signing in major record label history. The song was championed by BBC Radio 2 and a fortnight after its re-release, replaced Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" at the top of the UK charts. It also spent ten weeks at #1 in Australia, and finished the year as the country's highest selling single. Other countries it topped the chart include Ireland and Sweden. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England, for all above)

You're right... punk rockers don't, and hippies do. That's why she talks about '77 *and* '69. Part of both cultural revolutions.
